knocking gearbox?
Discussion
hi folks, had a small problem with an exhaust bracket rattling on the gearbox, turned the bracket around and it has plenty of clearance. Now im not to sure the bracket was the problem. The knocking is still there on tickover. When i look under the car, the gearbox has some jerky movements which is causing the knocks. im thinking a mounting point needs attention. Anyone else had trouble with worn mountings. How difficult or expensive is this likely to be? i guess it could be possible that an engine mounting is the problem, the engine moves an the gearbox goes with it.
Oh yeah some chavs slashed my rear tyres! first case of vandalism ive encountered and hopefully the last. Glad they did the tyres and not scratch up the paintwork! anyone else have any trouble? people are usually quite respectful to tvrs in my experience.

No real problems with any knocking I'm glad to say. The rear gearbox mounting is a standard Ford part - should cost around £20 or so. Fitting is awkward as it has 6 nuts and bolts fixing it to the chassis plus a central bolt to mount to the gearbox. Probaly 1 hour labour cost if you have acess to a ramp otherwise jackup and support car well before climbing underneath - it is vitually in the centre of the car.
Engine mounts I think are meant to be Transit- again not to difficult but 1 hour labour each side if they come off ok. Use a jack and other supports to hold engine/gearbox when removing mounts.
When you think about it there are only 2 engine mounts and one gearbox mount holding the whole lot in. It is a lot of weight on these 3.
Good luck
