My wee boy is 8 and loves his XBOX but now also has a need to upgrade his PS3 to a PS4.

I know zero about consoles and there seems to be a range of PS4 available, limited edition, Pro, VR, Bundles etc.

What does he need?

Games played are mostly Minecraft, Star Wars Battlefront and of course Fortnite.

Will the handful of PS3 games he uses still work on a PS4?

What additional kit will he need?

There's not much to it really.

First thing to decide is if you want 4K / HDR or not. If you do then the PS4 Pro is the only option. I went for this to future proof, I'm only using it on a 1080p TV at the moment but if I get a 4K on in future then I can play in 4K

If you don't want 4K then the normal PS4 come with two storage options 500GB or 1TB. I'd go for the 1TB option as by all accounts you'll quickly fill 500GB, all games are installed onto the hard drive even if you have the disc. You can upgrade the 500GB ones easily enough though but depends if you want that hassle or not.

Everything else such as VR is an add-on, up to you if you think it will be useful or not.

Extra controller is handy for two player and a charging dock is worthwhile. Headset if you play online. Other than that you don't need much else

Basically that ^!

PS4 Pro if you want 4K

PS4 1TB otherwise - or if you're tech savvy and the man maths add up a PS4 500GB and a suitable priced (and spec'ed) 1TB or 2TB hard drive.

Yeah, if you don't need 4K get the big hard drive PS4 slim.

There's no backwards compatibility for PS4 though. You can buy digital versions of some PS3 games through the PS store but discs won't work

Get the pro - even at 1080p "enhanced" games provide better visuals and/or frame rates. It also makes things smoother if you do pick up the VR unit. Wait for black Friday though.

I have both - Ps4 1TB and a PS4 Pro - made sense in a man-maths way as I was needing two blueray players.....

Deffo this^^^ it'd be daft to buy a non "pro" version at the moment regardless of the TV you will be playing it on, games just run better on the Pro even on a regular 1080P tv .

plenty of mega bargains out there

Thanks all.

I will get a pro with 1tb of memory and then see about an extra controller and games.

Good shout re Black Friday.

£250 - £300 doable?

No but you can get a PS Play or something or other in the PS Store which has a fair few PS3 games you can download.
