Red x closed lane at motorway junction.

Travelling along the m1 earlier and lane one was closed due to a broken down car. The closure straddled a junction which got me thinking, are you allowed to cross the closed lane to exit the motorway? There were no signs saying junction closed.

Technically no. The lane is closed until the next gantry showing lane open.

As per Highway Code.

"If red lights flash on a signal and a red “X” is showing, you MUST NOT drive in the lane shown as closed beyond the signal. This applies until you pass another signal indicating that the lane is no longer closed, by displaying the word “End” or a speed limit sign and you are sure that it is safe to proceed."

I’ve seen this quite a few times in the m1. only sometimes the red x is before the junction but the junction is also before the obstruction.

I think it’s a flaw in the system, if they had more of the screens that had been warning about brexit they could say junction open and have the red x.

In this case the obstruction was about a quarter of a mile before the junction but the lane was still closed after.

The highway code certainly makes it seem black and white though.

Fairly common situation on roads like the M8 during the overnight roadworks - L1 will be closed for a lengthy stretch with red X overhead and cones on the road, but as you approach a junction, you'll find a pathway from L2 to the slip road formed out of cones and the blue sign with downward pointing left & right arrows. The slip road itself will normally be showing End above it with L1 still showing X.
