Not sure what to do on this one.

I picked up a new monitor on Friday from Currys: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/pc-monitor...

I connected the monitor to my PC using a HDMI lead and booted up. The monitor goes into power saving mode straight away. The monitor works fine using the VGA connection. Today I used a brand new HDMI lead and still the issue persists. If I switch the VGA lead to the HDMI connection after I have booted up the screen flickers to black and back to normal every couple of minutes. There is no such issue with the VGA cable.

Google suggests this issue has been encountered before: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/monitor-ke...

Am I losing out in picture quality by not being unable to connect the monitor via HDMI? If so, is that reason enough to ask Currys to swap it out for a different monitor?

Thanks

TLDR: Monitor will not connect to PC via HDMI. Should I return it.

Of course, it's new, take it back.

But how do you know the fault's not with your PC?

VGA is capped at 1024x768

HDMI goes right up to 4k.

Worlds apart.

This is most likely caused by incorrect settings on the monitor and/or your PC.

The monitor may have a mode switch in the menu settings to switch between HDMI & VGA inputs.

There is an option to select input type in the monitor settings but this menu is inaccessible when the monitor is in power saving mode.

I will try the monitor with my work laptop tomorrow to eliminate the issue being my computer. I am using the on-board graphics on my PC for the HDMI output.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Connect it via VGA, change settings to HDMI, and then connect again to the HDMI port.

Not so, was previously running a Samsung syncmaster 22" at 1920x1080 via VGA as that's all the monitor was equipped with.

Since when? I've run monitors above that resolution using VGA.

Don't know if he is trying to be clever, the VGA standard goes up to 640x480. The SVGA standard supported higher resolutions. What we are talking about here is the VGA connector. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

My mistake. I think I was thinking about VGA 640x480 "resolution". And somehow ended up at 1024 x 768!

Update: The monitor is fine when connected to my work laptop via HDMI so it must be an issue with my system. Next step is to get hold of a standalone graphics card.

Have you checked for an updated graphics driver or BIOS for your system? Might be worth doing this (if you haven't already) before spunking money on a dedicated GPU smile

I recently just did a fresh Win 10 install on an SSD but the newest drivers available for my motherboard are from 2015.
