Market Watch: BMW E60 M5

Hi all!

I started working on a project a few weeks ago to acquire used car sales data from various sources with the intention of analysing the data in some meaningful way, to aid better buying decisions.

I've picked the BMW E60 M5 for the first guide to share, and hope to add guides for other cars later.

E60/1 M5 Pricing by Model Year

• Each blue dot represents a used M5 for sale.

• 2005-2006 models appear to have bottomed out, with 2007 models demanding a slightly higher premium.

• A budget between £10k-£15k puts you within reach of 2005-2007 models.

• Not much sales data for 2009-2010 cars, these model years rarely appear in the classifieds - I wonder if M5 sales tanked during this time due to the financial crisis?

• There are some outliers (top of trend) which could be low mileage cars and around 2007 onwards some E61 tourings which were made in low numbers.

E60 M5 Pricing by Model Year (Pre-Facelift vs Facelift)

• Same data plotted on the graph as above, this time differentiating pre and post facelift models.

• In mid 2007 the E60 had a facelift, I believe the touring model was also introduced at this time.

E60/1 M5 Pricing by Mileage

• Each dot represents an M5 for sale. Blue is for the Saloon, and Red is for the Touring.

• It appears once mileage is above 60k, higher mileage does not impact the price as much.

• One possible explanation could be due to the BMW Mondial Warranty; I believe premiums go up substantially once the mileage exceeds 60k. So a sub 60k may be more desirable for those wanting to take out a warranty at reasonable cost.

M5 vs M6

• Each blue dot represents an M5 for sale, and each orange dot represents an M6 for sale.

• I thought it would interesting to compare the pricing of the saloon and coupe (M6 uses same engine, and has a cf roof).

• 2005 - 2006 M5/M6 models have parity with each other, whereas post 2007 the M6 seems to be at a slight premium. Recall some of these M5 outliers around 2007 (top of trend) are likely the tourings.

M5 Best Deal

• Finally, we have a bubble chart for 3 axis... Price vs Model Year vs Mileage.

• Each bubble represents a used M5 for sale. The size of the bubble is relative to the mileage. Lower mileage cars (small bubbles) are printed on top of higher mileage cars (larger bubbles).

• At a glance we can see there is a lot of choice between the 2005-2007 models at a variety of mileages within the £10k-£15k band. There are some bargains to be had for the 2005-2006 models, and paying a small premium might see you in a 2007 facelifted M5.

That's all I have - Remember, this data can only tell us so much so treat it as a guide - the cheapest price shown on the graph may not be a healthy car, missing service history, or poverty spec etc - be sure to read the PH buyers guide linked above!

Surely that lowest priced M5 must have been with a bust SMG/Vanos/Bearings - it's not far of what you'd get for a car with a grenaded engine?

How do you know that 2005-2006 prices have "bottomed out"? Aren't they always effectively "bottomed out" as they'll be the lowest as they're the oldest? Where is your supporting data showing that vehicles such as the M5 and M6 start to appreciate in price after fourteen years?
