Hi All,

Just got myself a little runabout for the winter - a 2010 skoda fabia 1.4 16v petrol, 115k on the clock with full service history. Bodywork wise pretty tidy bar a few scratches here and there. Seems to drive ok too, but have noticed a few things since picking it up.

A bit of knocking from front of car on uneven surfaces, especially noticable at slow speeds. Guessing bushes on front suspension not great on these?

Oil leak from engine - from what I can tell it's coming from back of engine, or possibly drain plug. Found drips of oil at back of sump. Will have to have a good clean up and monitor to check. Any known issues around there?

The EPC and engine check lights stay on when I switch on the ignition, but go off when I start the car. Is that normal? Thought they should go off after a few seconds. Plugged an ODB2 reader and used torque to scan for codes but didn't find any.

Hoping this runabout doesn't turn into a project in it's own right...

Who me ?

Fizzy- I run an old 2004 mk1. IF suspension is similar, then there's two two possibilities of knock- droplinks on ARB, or consol lower rear bushes.
For first- find a source of decent ones. For second- fit Powerflex nylon bushes. More expensive, but it's fitand forget.
For advice, I'd suggest you visit Briskoda.net.

Lower arm rear bushes.

I did my wife's Mk1 Fabia a few years ago after Xmas. It snowed.

The VAG ones are b'stard tight.

I had a look around yesterday and the rear bottom bushes don't look torn or particularly damaged. Trying to bounce the car doesn't make any obvious noises. When at low speeds/revs when there's less engine/wind/road noise it's most noticable - a fairly rapid random tapping/dull thud like noise. I wiggled the wheel, the exhaust and anything I could lay my hands on and nothing obvious.

I did notice that there does seem to be a big gap between the cap/top of the front struts and the bodywork in the engine bay - does this mean top mounts may have gone? If it's not that and suspension seems ok, possibly drive shaft?

It might be a case of waiting until things get bad enough to notice what needs doing. biggrin

Update for this - fitted a new drop link to front right. On checking old one there didn't seem any play, so not surprisingly knocking is still there. I think it may have aggravated the other side since thats started with a loud knock over pumps now.

Looking for ARB bushes next, once I know what size to get. Again, they look ok from a visual inspection and I thought at first would be an easy change until I started reading up on access issues.

Not had any answer regarding EPC light on the skoda forums.

Can smell oil quite often so definitely leaking somewhere (likely a few places going by what I've since read about the engine). Heard some worrying gear like noise on way back from work the other day - fingers cross on gearbox being ok. Also had an in car swimming pool in the rear spare wheel well.

Starting to think I should have gone for another car. It has plenty of electric gizmos which all seem to be working, and drives ok-ish generally, but does seem to have a lot of niggling issues.

Sounds normal to me. The EPC monitors a few sensors and some need the engine running to check them.
