That’s actually a tough choice.. Honda looks great IMO but the interior of the Skoda looks comfier, and it looks a bit smarter and more grown up inside and out.

I’m a big fan of reliable Japanese cars but I think the Skoda would win for me.

I run a 1.6 2015 civic hatchback SR.
the heated leather, and full glass roof, plus reversing camera, auto lights and wipers, and garmin satnav make it a nice place to be, front and rear parking sensors as well.. the satnav can be updated via the garmin website for FREE...and even I could do it myself.
took a recent trip from north oxford to Bucks, then down to Bournemouth, averaged 74.1mpg over the 300 miles.
usually average 64mpg per tank.
free tax as well.
the radio can mirror android or apple...

used to run a 120i bmw 2015 and just found on all the broken roads it wanted to skip and jump around. the civic for a daily driver is a more relaxed place to be.

on the estate you can even get a bike mount to go in the hole under the floor so you can mount 2 bikes standing up in the boot....I can even fit 1 bike without removing any wheels in my hatchback...the magic back seats are great..

no mechanical issues so far. I did buy a space saver wheel. as im not a fan of using glop but that's just me being old school.

My vote goes also to the civic.
I think the 6th gear of the Civic will help you tremendously on the M-way.

on the motorway the civic likes to be driving in a relaxed manor, at 70mph the mpg meter is at max, at 80 things dip the other way.
my 300 mile trip involved a 32mile run to my mothers...which took 1.5hrs in stop start traffic...then round the m25 and down to Bournemouth...and of course the same on the way back...but without the stop start traffic..
was chuffed with the mpg. the 120i bmw used to deliver 41 (petrol with 178hp)
my sr uses the little 16" wheels so dirty cheap tyres, just bought a pair of continentals for £65 each/ fitted.

so no reason why you can't easily get 55 even at 80mph...
.
worth looking into getting the service pack, I paid £250 for 2 services.

but lets be honest they are a quirky looking car...haha....

all the reviews comment on this....
the drivers seating position is pretty high..yep its height adjustable and has loads of motors and adjustment bolsters,back suport...but it doesn't go very low....so if you enjoy sitting on the floor driving position you will need to buy the mark 10 not the 9....
.
oh 2 people have mentioned 6th gear....I find that ideally you need to be at 50+ to use 6th.
the eco button...only changes the a/c to half power, doesn't change the engine mapping or anything like that.

I cant give a valid opinion but 2 points already mentioned would sway me:

The 6th gear in the Civic is bonus.
Reliability, maintenance and running costs would put me off the Skoda.

I quite like the looks.

Its just been serviced, 2 new tyres, years honda warranty and a removeable tow bar(which I need).

The octavia is just a little newer looking/feeling, however I worry that its more likely to throw up a larger bill and that the lack of 6th gear might annoy.

Went to see the civic, what a mess and waste of my time.

I’m so annoyed.

Covered in scuffs and scratches, bonnet is rusting where there’s stone chips, all plastics heavily scuffed inside.

Also the two new tyres are the cheapest ditch fingers going. Which given how cheap decent ones are in that size just shows how poor that dealer is.

1st one I saw at a Car supermarket...rang first and asked about tyres and bodywork repairs...."its mint you will buy it...", pay £100 holding deposit...which it did...

did the 40mile drive up there...for a 5pm arrange apt.
had to wait 1.3hrs to see the car....was getting dark so asked to see it inside...
tyres all down to 2mm and bonnet had sanding marks, and top coat sprayed over stone chips and missing rubber trim strips under the bonnet...said its had repair work to a poor standard...you could even feel the sanding marks all over the bonnet.
sale guy said...looks alright to me.....on an 11k car....I don't think so...
in the end bought from a different garage. took 2 weeks to get my deposit back...after loads of phonecalls.

good luck with finding a decent car...I wanted a blue one....lovely metallic dark blue....but in the end settled on the best car I could find which ended up being metallic..."bosch" white....yawn...

A shame the Honda was a poor example. My wife has a 1.6 i-DTEC hatchback model and it is excellent. Not just a really nice drive, but also faultlessly reliable and very economical. We've had over 70mpg for longer journeys without much effort.

I've got a 2017 Octavia VRS 2.0 diesel on PCH and recently bought a 2016 Civic 1.6 i-DTEC Tourer SE Plus so that the wife can use the Octavia while on maternity leave. The idea is that the Civic will then be the main family car when the Octavia lease ends late next year.

I bought the Civic so that I can hopefully save some money on my daily commute (50 miles each way). The Skoda is obviously faster and more capable when pushing on, but i found that I really like the Civic. Although the Skoda is faster, in some ways it doesn't feel as rewarding or involving to drive - probably somewhat down to the DSG gearbox (the Civic is manual).

The Civic has a nicer ride and is a decent drive. The engine is really impressive for a 1.6. I haven't had it long enough to record tank-to-tank fuel consumption but the onboard computer is showing well over 70mpg on my daily commute.

The Skoda infotainment is much newer and better. The only things I notice I miss between the Octavia and Civic are Android Auto and the LED headlights. I think the SR comes with LED headlights?
