The Kiwi tradition of hair-raising aviating...

It may have begun here or maybe its origins truly are lost in the mists of the twentieth century...

Landing at Wellington can be dodgy even today due to the strong winds that often occur there.
The second time I flew back from Wellington the weather was grim: rain and very low cloud (it looked like it was down to the rooftops). When we got to the airport I was expecting to find the airport closed and flights delayed but as we got out the hire car an Air NZ plane emerged from the cloud and landed. They seem to fly no matter what over there.
Judging by some of the pics of the interisland ferry they also sail in any weather.

I had to fly into Wellington with my other half when she was 8 months pregnant with our first son to attend her father’s funeral. As you can imagine she was not in a good way after nearly 30 hours of travel from the UK.
The flight down from Auckland was grim with very high winds from the start. As we approached Wellington, I was convinced we were going to abort and return to Auckland as the winds were so bad, but credit to the pilot, he got us down. The fact that I must have had a better view down the runway than he did as we crabbed into land counts as one of the more “Interesting” landings I have ever had. But to these pilots its just a common thing so of little concern.

"Three near disasters"...confess I was expecting typical Youtube hyperbole, so perhaps a couple of go-arounds & a rather energetic touchdown...wow, how wrong could I be! Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention...
Same here!
That was hair-raising stuff that!

The pilots are well used to it. The worst one I experienced was in a PC12 in a howling gale, where the pilot warned it would it would be a "little sporty". I'm yet to experience my first go around there though. IforB said:
