Town Council succumb so it's All White Now!

Over one hundred and fifty years, not a peep out of anyone about the entrance signs into Bideford, the seaside town full of, well, you know if you've been there… white buildings, lots of 'em.

'There be RACIST overtones in them there signs you.' (Devon accent).

They (council) capitulated and signs will change - in spite of majority wishing to leave as is.

Seems like they've chosen a sensible option, adding the context to it actually adds something of interest. I bet most people wouldn't know where the phrase came from otherwise.

I understand its pretty bad in canada and parts of America.

The real underlying insult is those being offended on behalf of others are the ones committing racial bigotry by belittling them, of the black people I know I'll bet none of them give a st about a white painted town calling itself white because, surprise surprise, they're fully evolved adult people capable of rational thought, not some dim witted cry baby's that these woke types think they are.

Without context, the sign is confusing. I'd read it and think "that's a bit weird, maybe all the houses are white or it's some hark back to a more racist era". Add in the context and it makes sense and educates the reader. Given what they changed it to, I'd imagine the complaints were more to do with the lack of context than people saying calling it a white town is inherently racist. PH can be such a bunch of snowflakes at times.
