I'm going to buy some wheels + winter tyres for my E90. It has run flats, so of course it's supplied with exactly 0 of the tools you might need to change a wheel. I'm slightly surprised they even bothered to include a locking wheel nut.

I was going to try to find a second hand E46 OEM scissor jack. They ought to be pretty cheap, they ought to be fine for lifting the car to change a wheel (I used one for exactly that with my old E46), and it seems that they'll fit the E90 jack mounts.

Will that work?

Is there anything I need to bear in mind if I need to buy a hydraulic jack?

These are hopefully stupid questions with straightforward answers - I have just never had to think about this before.

An E46 jack will work just fine, as the jacking points on an E90 are exactly that same size and shape.

But as you'll be swapping wheels twice a year (which is what I do with my E90 with winters) you could just spend a bit more and get something like this:- https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tjl2-2-tonne-low-p...

I got one last year and it's easier to use than the E46 jack, plus it fits under my Z4 too!

OK it isn't workshop quality, but for a couple of times a year that doesn't really matter.

Not as cheap as a second hand scissor jack, but this is what I have. I prefer dropping the car so the weight's resting on a stand rather than working just using the jack alone.

If using some like the above, you need a jacking shoe as well so that the jacking points don't get destroyed - this is the sort of thing I mean -

Oops. Forgot about the jacking pad - even though I do use one! rolleyes

I just use the jack to swap wheels, but I would put the car on stands for anything else.

Thanks for the links - the eBay pads in particular are cheaper than I'd seen elsewhere. I'll probably get the SGS jack and a couple of pads. This is not much more expensive than a scissor jack but should be usefully more convenient.

(Are the jacking pads needed when using the under car jacking points? Or are they only required when using the corner ones? But I suppose if you're simply changing a wheel then it's probably more convenient to use the corner ones anyway.)
