Winter Tyres for a Super Naked
Discussion
Needing some opinions my lovely BB's
I've got 2 sets of wheels for my bike and typically run a summer set and slicks for the odd track day but given the season is over I want to change the track wheels to a dedicated winter/cold/wet tyre
I was out today with my Supercorsa's and for anyone who has ridden with these in 5-8 degrees in wet/damp/rain will know of the first world struggles. They are SC1 front and SC2 rear to make it worse not even SP so the damn thing lights up like a Christmas tree
I just cant make up my mind what to use. It will ONLY be for road, and in the winter months. I'll be straight back onto Supercorsa/Conti Race Attack/Metz RR etc as weather picks up
Best grip & warm up is all I want - dont care about longevity although I'm sure they will last a while
I've tried Metz M7RR's and I'll be honest they weren't for me (Lack of feel)
I've thought about Bridgestone T30 Evos (I can get them cheap), the newer T31s, maybe S22's? I'm only going on these based on people saying they are very good this time of year
Bit of a strange one maybe but if you can help it'll be appreciated

I've been pleasantly surprised with the Avon Storm 3d ultras I've got on my K1300. Not missed a beat so far. Only done a couple of thousand miles on them though
edit: And had t30s on my gen1 tuono. Very good tyre, didn't let go once in the wet, not rode much on them in the cold though.

Assuming you want to use the bike on the road and not on the track over winter then I don't see why, what is viewed as the best tyre by the majority of "all weather bikers", the PR5, is not the best solution. How much faster and harder than those chaps do you plan to ride? How much more grip than those chaps do you think you need?

How cold do they cope with? could be a good suggestion.PR5 are the best bet or Metzeler Roadtec 01's.
around Kielder. The limiting factor was my cold hands
Depending on how cold you're planning on going really?
If it's slogging through some pretty cold weather, PR5's of Metzler MT-01's. I found the Metzler's had a better profile than the PR3's but on my 821, they did really lack feel, especially when really cold (2-3 degrees). The grip is there though.
If you're used to SuperCorsas, then may dropping to something like a Rosso 3 may be good. I've ridden with them in some pretty horrible weather and found them very good. Profile is similar to SC's, but much better in the wet and cold and more durable, they don't have cut outs right to the edge like a M7RR though. They will need warming up and you don't have the twist and go like a proper Sport Touring, all weather tyre.
Maybe check out the Angel GT's?

Based on my own S1000R.
Power RS's are pretty impressive in torrential rain and temps around 7 to 10 degrees, not as good below that though but not as bad as I was expecting.
I ran PR5's on it last winter and they were great in the wet and cold temps. I really did not like them in the dry though weirdly, I found the rear in particular to be very unpredictable. I actually pulled over a couple of times to see if I had an oil leak or something that was getting on to the tyre (there wasn't) road conditions were absolutely fine too so it wasn't that.

Yes road not track at all. What chaps are you referring too?Don't plan to ride any faster, and you can never have too much grip

I've literally just got off the phone to FWR and he said exactly the same. Power RS+ he reckons are very good in colder weather and wet but can still deal with dry tarmac as it warmsPower RS's are pretty impressive in torrential rain and temps around 7 to 10 degrees, not as good below that though but not as bad as I was expecting.

I was absolutely set on going with PR5s after reading the above comments now can't decide but think I'll go with the power rs's
I just want something that doesn't make my arse pucker up at 20 degrees lean which is how I felt on the SC Sunday with any throttle getting the back to happily step out

"those chaps" being the "all weather bikers" who normally ride right through winter.
Like these bikers I ride all year round. Been some bloody good help from a fair few on here and my latest gerbing heated gloves as a recommendation from here has made my winter rides enjoyableI've gone for a set of power RS+ and will see how I get on with these
I think you've probably made the right choice. In the cold and wet there's nothing I've tested (yet) that's better than a Road5, but like toxicnerve I don't think you'd get on with the Road5 in the dry so I think your slightly exuberant style will prefer the RS+.

My personal advice; don't bother. I have the Angel GTII on the ZZR at the moment and it's becoming slightly frustrating having to nurse the acceleration through 7k rpm to stop it spinning up. In the dry. Every time.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

t to a blanket, they're my third set over 15000 miles and I wouldn't fit any other tyre.
