Sailor rode at 155mph to catch ship
A MOTORCYCLIST has been banned from driving for just eight weeks after reaching the fastest speed ever recorded in Hampshire.
Irresponsible Matthew Whitehead was caught riding his Suzuki SXR 750CC motorbike at a staggering 155mph on the A3(M) near Horndean.
Whitehead, who serves aboard the warship HMS Marlborough, was pulled over by police at 11.40pm on August 30 last year.
He was racing from his home in North London to Portsmouth in order to board his ship which was about to leave.
PC Pete Hayward from Cosham Roads Policing Unit, said: 'This man obviously had no regard for his own safety or that of anyone else on the road. To travel at 155mph is absolutely lethal.'
Whitehead appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court yesterday, having pleaded guilty by post to the offence of speeding.
District Judge Roger Ede sentenced Whitehead, who already had three points on his licence, to a driving disqualification for 56 days and a fine of £175 with £35 costs.
A Royal Navy spokesman said disciplinary action could be taken against Whitehead if commanding officers felt it appropriate.

I know that particular stretch very well
it’s dead straight and downhill which slowly levels off, you can see clearly for literally miles ahead. It can be perfectly safe to do that speed, trust me
The only thing that worries me is how he was caught. Besides, who said there was anyone else on the road? It’s usually dead at midnight.

What b0ll0x. Was the biker being dealt with in a séance or a courtroom? Why do BiB like that come out with utter drivel. There is no arbitrary speed that is of itself unsafe. What's the odds old Powerphrase Pete has hit 155 and nothing else?

Hope he never goes to Europe then,........by road OR rail!

Since when has "having no regard for one's own safety" been any criterion for measuring the severity of an offence (apart from suicide in days gone by ... necessarily never prosecuted, BTW).
Given the idiocy of this police officer's statement, one should question statements made by him in court, he is obviously given to exageration and hyperbole.
Extract from court record [don't you just wish?]:
"PC Pete Hayward from Cosham Roads Policing Unit, you said that travelling at 155mph is lethal. Is that correct?
"Yes, Sir, it is."
"That you said it, or that it is lethal?"
"Both, Sir."
"Hmm. Now, can you please point out the accused?
"Yes, Sir [points], it's the man in motorcycle leathers standing in the dock."
"And - I appreciate, PC Pete Hayward from Cosham Roads Policing Unit, that you are not a medical man, but you have probably seen a dead body or two during your career as a police officer - would you say that the accused was alive or dead?"
"Alive, Sir."
"Now tell me, have you ever travelled by commercial passenger aircraft ... on vacation, perhaps?"
"Yes, Sir."
"And - I appreciate that you are not an expert in aviation, but you must have a good appreciation of the speed at which large, commercial airliners travel - would you saw that you have travelled at more than 155mph?"
"Er, yes, Sir, I suppose so."
"And, PC Pete Hayward, are you alive or dead?"
"Alive, Sir."
"So, PC Pete Hayward from Cosham Roads Policing Unit, is travelling at 155mph - in your own words - 'absolutely lethal'?"
[A titter ran round the court.]

For attaining the glorious velocity of ONE HUNDRED MILES PER HOUR on the Queens highway number one I have been awarded 6 points on my driving license and asked to pay the princely sum of £500 for the pleasure. A bargain at half the price wouldn't you say!
How nice.
A fiver a mph, even me Tiv don't do that. 6 points seems a bit steep, mind you I received a bonus 2 points for my last offence for not being able to produce a bit of paper within 7 days even tho I produced all other docs, I'm half way there now to a canteen of cutlery.

Well PC Hayward if that is what you actually said I reckon you were talking nonsense, and that helps nobody. The man was indeed speeding, by a very large margin, but that is about all you can safely say about it.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Now isn't that a little unfair Streaky?. The comparison is with an airliner in a controlled air space, monitored continually by others (ATC) throughout its journey, equipped with radar and pilot warned of any hazard (other craft/thunderstorm etc) within 3 miles or more or an anticipated course that will result in a collision -
to a motor vehicle on a road left only to the drivers sole ability to comprehend a hazard but not one imminent.
A driver given the same attention as that of a pilot could safely do the same could he not? But as he isn't then the danger is inherent, n'ces pa?

To be pedantic, he did say "absolutely" lethal. Check the dictionary definition of absolute. I don't think it has an exceptions!
The PC is a fool.
And I did spot the reference to 159mph - just in case anyone missed it this is of course the speed recently clocked by a fellow PC on public roads in a Vectra "polishing up his [absolutely lethal] skills". Which is why he was sacked, lost his licence, was banned for ten years, and fined £5000. Obviously. Absolutely in fact.
Doh!
