Hi,

Recently my old 2003 XJ6 was vandalised by some lovely person running up the bonnet and jumping on the roof then sliding off the back, small and large dents in the roof, plus deep scratches on the boot.

I'm insured by the famous 2 letter breakdown company and covered for malicious damage with an excess of £250. I have a crime number and no claims protection.

I've had a quote from my local body shop to fix the dents and scratches for £600 they suggested going through my insurance.

I rang my insurance company and asked (as its not an accident) if just reporting the vandalism and NOT claiming would affect my future premiums, the only answer I got was "Maybe".

Does anyone have any experience of just reporting damage and that affecting premiums.

Cheers.

It will. We had a car vandalised years ago (Fully, every panel hammered and every window smashed, lights gone, the lot) and insurance went up. We didn't pursue a claim because we knew the car would've been worth pennies so just sucked it up and bought a new car.

Might as well go with the insurance company, sounds like you've already told them. Whether official report or not, it's now on your record.

Non-fault claims almost always result in a premium hike, as statistically you're more likely to have another claim. I think we probably have the brake checkers to blame for that one......

Its a claim,so you will loose some of your no claims discount.
Mind you with a £600 job, £250 excess, you may think about not claiming and pay for the repairs yourself.

And I assume from a phone number they don't have for you on their system?

And what if it was? I only generalised, until I report an issue do you think they are going to spend time following it up? Or do you live all your life being paranoid?

Surely the fact that your car was damage would impact your risk profile .. so it would only be natural for premiums to go up ?

And since you've reported the Crime .. it might raise the risk for your postcode anyway?

Why not just claim on the insurance ( unless you are early 20's then your NCB doesn't mean much anyway .. try running a quote through some of the comparison sites with and without ncb or the "accident" and you will see how little if makes !

If its just dents and scratches then have you tried a dent specialists rather than a bodyshop ?

Hopefully you didn't call then from your phone.

Seems a bit of a risk to report the incident to the police, actually phoning the insurance company and then try to hide it. I hope this doesn't come back to to bite you.

Repairing a roof isn't easy. I hope the guy manages to do a good job for £600.

Do you think they are going to flag up my phone when I asked a general question?

And yes they come highly recommended.

Yes I had dent company out they won't touch it as the dent is too big and the roof is aluminium.

I doubt many people phone in to ask specific questions about vandalism cover.

I'm sure the person on the other side of the phone will have guessed exactly what is going on.

Have you read your policy? Some of the insurance companies promise vandalism won't be counted against the policyholder.

The fact the garage is telling you to claim on your insurance makes me wonder if they are fully confident. What happens if the work ends up costing more than the £600 as it was harder than he thought?

I didn't ask specific questions just general.

How exactly?

Yes I have read it and it doesn't hence why I rang up and asked them.

It was a quote not an estimate.
