Some of the keys on my 2012 MacBook Pro have stopped working, it's a near vertical line of keys that are affected - 2, W, S, X.

Strange that its happened like this, especially in a vertical row. They were working fine, then just s topped.

Any suggestions on how to repair, or will I need to take it to the Apple Store?

(By the way, it's taken my about 15 mins to type this post on my keyboard by having to search for those letters on the internet and copy/paste them into this post redface )

I replaced the keyboard on my late 2011 MacBook Pro with a replacement keyboard from eBay. Took an hour or so and had no issues.

The only problem MIGHT be is if the fault is in the connector or board that the keyboard plugs into

If it has one of the new "butterfly" keyboards (not sure when they were introduced), get some canned air and blast under the keys. These things are prone to keys not responding when they get bits of dirt under them. My 2017 MacBook Pro is the same. In fact, try that anyway!
