Jaguar XE

hi Guys,

its been a while since I last posted but wanted some knowledge on this car. I can barely find a used petrol manual so have opted for a diesel manual instead. are they any good, anything I should really be looking out for or just avoid completely?

Had one on lease for two years. Nice but wouldn't buy one, just not big enough as rear seats are quite cramped.

If getting a diesel, then make sure its got the AdBlue tank, especially if you're doing low miles. In fact, if doing low miles, find a petrol.

I do 300 miles a week, minimum, so diesel should be ok. Just not sure if its wise buying a diesel these days?

reliability surveys highlight that most of Jag's problems are with their diesels. petrol cars are pretty reliable.
i'd choose the 250 petrol, plenty of go in the real world but without the weight/complexity of 4wd in 300.

Why shouldn't it be a manual, especially if it's a petrol one?

Automatic MK2, S-type and E-Type values seem to be well below the values of manual ones!

He said he's looking at XE diesels (not a classic Jaguar) which suit a auto better.

True, but he did say he wanted a manual in his original post!

Some of us just like a manual - I bought a manual BMW 123d because I've never liked autos.

I have mainly only ever owned manuals (the only Auto being another jag about 15 years ago)

saying that, I test drove an Auto and actually enjoyed it. so Its now down between a sport or a prestige ingenium. somehow the prestige is quicker on paper than the sport

Friend has XE 250 (auto I think). He was saying he got 50 mpg from it the other day.

I had a brand new XF from 2016-2019. Very similar to the XE but not identical, granted.

They are utter turd, buy a 3 series.

Think XE autos have the ZF 8 speed box in that go in all sorts of German ( and Swedish) stuff.
It's as good as an auto as you'll get at the moment - hybrids aside.

Correct; the gearbox is the ZF8. Let down by the software in my opinion.

Points to look out for:

Rear centre brake light water collection.

Diesel fuel tank cooler recall undertaken if affected.

Early corrosion on wheels and centre caps. Jaguar dealers seem to use neat TFR. Corroded brake calipers too.

Side skirts stone chips - due to airflow down the side of the car. Dealers may fix under warranty.

Digital clock losing a minute a month... known issue.

Get the alignment done as the fancy rear suspension is prone to being knocked about by our roads.

We've been running one (Portfolio 200bhp) for three years. Long runs average 58mpg. Comfortable and quiet on sensible wheel size and tyres.

The digital clock loses a second every time the car starts, which can be a lot with start/stop. It’s really irritating that a new car cannot keep the correct time, when my first car could over 30 years ago. There is allegedly a software patch that corrects this, but we haven’t had it yet.

Well well! I was wondering why my xe can read road signs, do auto high beam very well but cant tell the time accurately!

By the way, I really like my xe. It's a great drive, most reviews rate it above a 3 series for handling, steering feel and dynamics. Not the roomiest in the back granted, but then neither is a 3 series really!

I prefer the XE to the XF, like the handling, great on the local country roads.

Have recently traded in my XE-S 340 after 2.5 years - for a nice shiny new I-Pace - I pick up on Monday.

The auto box in the XE was great and the supercharged v6 full of go, and for the engine reasonably economical (35 to the gallon on average), though there are times I would have fancied a manual, the auto worked better in town/city.

Make sure if you buy one you get the folding rear seats they were and I think still are an option.
