Is there any freeware or low cost software out there to read an OST file of about 1.5gb?

If not free/cheap anyone know what works for one of that size?

I have used this before and it worked well. Kernel OST Viewer - The viewer version is free, however if you need to export the content then you have to pay for that.

I've used Emailchemy with great success to read and convert Outlook files to other formats.

Not free, but a very comprehensive tool. Great for moving Outlook emails to other formats (for example moving to Apple Mail on OS X devices).

ETA: there's a demo version that you can use to check it can read your source data before purchasing.
