992 v 993

991 v 993

991 v 997

Golf v 991

Golf v 997

Interesting how every generation of 911 bigger than the last. Still not too big compared to a family hatch but when did it cease to be a sports car in terms of mass?

I think the Golf had similar expansion.

So has just about every car these days. I still think the 911 is a credible sports car. It is eminently trackable. Obviously not a Dallara or a Caterham 7 if that is the definition of sports car.

Golf is massive now, the current Polo is bigger than the Mk1/2
911 has got bigger but I don't personally agree with those who say it is not a sports car - it is not a GT in my mind in terms of it's ethos, design, or how it drives
Modern sports cars are bigger but that doesn't make them not sports cars
A Caterham is a sports car but is quite an extreme & track focused car - it's really a track car that can be driven to the track and back on the road

A 991 and 992 is significantly longer and wider than a Mk7 Golf hatch. The Golf is of course taller, but overall the 911 is the bigger car.

I bought a new VW Polo for my eldest recently and I was stunned by the size of it - feels bigger than a Golf of only a couple of generations ago. 911's are now too big in my humble opinion, but such is the price of progress.

Trouble is as the human race is progressively getting fatter and fatter their chosen mode of transport has to follow suit..Its like pig sty in that they need to be built big enough to accommodate the largest pig..

Even though 911s have increased in size, they are still the most chuckable of drivers cars which truly 'shrink' around you unlike many others.

I think it looks quite small when you look how all the other cars are on the road esp how low the 991 shape is also.

so while the 911 has grown, it's smaller than the cars we see today on our roads.
Merc, M5 even the M2's are Big cars.

if I park my Golf infront of the 911 you cannot it. let alone the SUV market or a modern saloon.

It’s not that much bigger really considering the decades that have passed. Some OTT comments on this really when you look at your actual picture.

Cabin size hasn't increased much looking at the photo, but power has considerably, therefore tyre size, and wing width.

Behave. Name a recent car from Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini with a smaller footprint. And no one would argue they aren’t sports cars.

So, what is a sports car then, by your definition? Name some models so we have a base from which we can have a sensible discussion.

You are welcome to your view. But when that view suggests the GT3 RS is as big as an SUV, you should expect some push back.
