Hi,

Thinking about a Honda CRF450 to add to my collection for local journeys and fun in the local countryside.

Quite a few pop up on eBay almost new around the £4500-£5000. Curious why somebody would spend approx 7k new and then sell up 12 months later ?

Are these a good buy and why so many for sale ?

Regards

Martyn

The MX bikes (CRF 450) is around 7new and cheap for what it is. The trail version, the CRF450X, is a cracker of a bike too, but pretty much a crf450 from about 2009 or so, (no bad thing they were brill), and as such are normally nearer £6k on the road ready to go.

So £5k at a year old is not unusual. As for why do people sell them, get one, go ride it off road for a day, come back on Sunday and tell us how your tourettes is going, ie you will be walking down stairs shouting random swear words with every movement!).
Great fun, great hobby, the CRF X will be a decent competition bike too, v reliable, little spannering needed, rip your arms out once jetted right, more than you need as a greenlaner, but when road work is involced that is no bad thing.

Do it. It will be the most fun you will EVER have on a motorbike.

Offroad the 250x is a cracking bike, not as quick handling as equivalent Ktm or husky but a great laning bike

My rich mates bought the 450, then they discovered the KTM 300 TPI and sold them on!

the CRFs come in quite a few flavours, R, RX, X, L

the R and RX need a new piston after not many hours and are a bit of a maint handful..

the X is more usable for road and enduro, has kick and electric start (most R are kick only) and longer service intervals, has lights as std etc. i have one fully motd, they are simple carb bikes so easy to look after

the L is road ready but detuned and a bit heavier.. they can be had for big discounts off new, they havent caught on here due to 25hp. fuel injected, similar to the 250L but not made in thailand, better suspension etc..

they are good fun but not cheap to run ime

They are 10x better built than all the KTM stuff you see about also.

Two stroke husky/KTM stuff is fashionable but not built like the jap bikes. They are better in the extreme stuff but most people don't ride extreme events.

Crf450x came out in 05 and has always been based off the crf450r that came out a few years before.
Main differences being wider ratio gearbox (still not that wide) And electric start. Loads of other little differences also, 18" rear wheel, stand, Speedo drive, suspension, lights, camshaft etc etc. Its not simply a 450r with some lights and a battery. But is based off it.

They have issues with wearing inlet valves but this is mainly due to neglect and running air filters too long between cleans.

05 models need a full quart of oil in the transmission side (engine and trans are seperate in them).

450rx isn't a wide ratio box and is much closer to a 450r.

450x is no longer sold in the UK, They hold money well and are well thought of bikes.

Note - if spending 5k second hand you can stretch £500 extra and get a brand new 2018 wr450 with full warranty including OTR. They are similair bikes and yamaha seem to have found a load of containers of them that are spread around there dealer network.

I currently own an 450x and wr. Any questions ask away!
