Buying a Blue ray player just to watch Alien 4k
Discussion
I have to confess I don't watch our 50 inch 4k tv at all sadly, but I saw that Alien, my all time horror flick which gives a side of sci fi as well is now 4k and I need to buy a blueray player to show it.
For someone just streaming nowadays this is like buying an old valve amp and phonogram just to hear something really nice.
Any thoughts on a cheap blue ray player for just one £16.98 film? Has modern day really got that disposable?
Can you get a good one for less than £50?

There are one or two cheap 4k players with no bells and whistles.
Alien 4k is HDR10 meaning no Dolby Vision to worry about (I think) which will save ££ but if you get the bug for hard copies, Dolby Vision costs extra on a player. Of course if TV does not do DV then something not to worry about today.
I have got the disk but not watched it apart from a quick check through and it looks stunning. (rumours of Aliens 4k soon).
Also does your TV have HDMI 4k inputs that can take 4k and or HDR10. Then a 4k HDMI lead if connected direct but through an amp, can your amp do 4k. If not connect to the TV and surround to the amp from the TV (if it can).
Easy.
PS. HDMI 4k cables can be had for a few quid depending on length.

The Alien films are so awesome! After a >10 year break I am starting to get back in to AV. I bought an Alien Blu-ray box set which I am playing on my son’s Playstation 4 via an ancient Denon amp and Pioneer plasma; magic!
When the Alien grabs Dallas in the air duct - kills me every time. Enjoy!

I have the disc and both the apple 4k and vudu 4k transfers. For someone just streaming nowadays this is like buying an old valve amp and phonogram just to hear something really nice.

The apple and vudu transfers are excellent but lack the lossless audio.
As this is a reference level transfer of a cleanly shot film I would insist that you need to purchase either the panasonic UB820 or the sony x800m2. both are around £280, i would not touch anything less with a barge pole.
If the lossless audio track is not a deal breaker then an apple 4k tv box will fit the bill.
