Last month a British tourist in Australia lost a foot in a shark attack - luckily he lived to tell the tale.

Farewell and adieu you lady’s of Spain

Chances are he drowned and then was scavenged.

Very few people die from shark attacks annually, around 10 worst case. Over 100 are killed by deer.....

There was a shark attack on Cottesloe Beach, Perth when I was there in 1997. I've not been in the sea since then!

Chances are he was killed to death by the shark.

Still, 100 million sharks are year are killed by humans, so we are winning.

Deer don't usually eat you though, and sharks rarely jump out in front of your car.

How the feck can you get lost in a canoe? All the ones I’ve seen are only about 8-10ft long...

In most places I’d agree with you, but not in La Reunion. It has become a rather bizarre shark attack black spot over the past 10 years, to the extent that it’s messing badly with the tourism industry.

Yep, that's the estimate of shark numbers being taken for whatever food source the various populations around the world deem necessary. Many of those may be smaller species, such as our dogfish, but what that Smithsonian Institute promoted research body doesn't say is how many shark exist in our oceans. 10 billion, maybe more?
