Need help buying my 3rd car. Current fleet is a Z4M, Clio 182 and a Mini convertible (hers), trying to keep miles off the Z4 and the clio isn't great fun commuting as it's a bit track focused, so it's noisy and uncomfortable. This new car is going to be short term, over winter whilst we move and I settle in a new job. Once spring/summer comes around I'll probably be happier to use the current cars or get something newer.

So, looking for something that I can waft to work in, it's currently about an hours drive probably half of it slow traffic, which will swap to 40 mins, half being traffic soon. Whilst being able to take a car load comfortably to the pub etc or a dump run. Usual other requriments such as cheap to run blah blah. Oh, 5 doors and a hatch is a must, OH has ruled out an estate confused Looking at £4k max, but can strech it if a 'step up' is possible. Prefer a petrol manual, but not overly fussed.

Honestly, all I can think is a 2.0TDI Golf or a A3. You can get a 2011/2012 for £4k with a good spec at 100k-120k miles.

Wafting to work? Super comfy, practical, only 30mpg ish but never breaks down or needs anything but servicing. Great stereo. My 08 RX400h with 110k is probably only worth 4-5k and I’d much rather do commuting duties in it than a diesel hatchback.

If you want something comfortable and reliable i would rule out anything VAG, i'd be looking at a Toyota Avenisis, you will get some change, it will be high 30's on a run and you won't get the sack for being late in.
