Some of you may have seen the below thread earlier this year about a PH'er who shipped his Porsche 911 to the USA to drive around for a long holiday. Many readers experienced interest in how it was done etc.

As a Brit living in the USA for 15 years and now a US citizen, this got me thinking if there is a business opportunity here. Instead of bringing your own car to the US, the business hires out a suitable car for you to enjoy a road trip based holiday. The business would be a car hire and holiday concierge service, providing recommendations on itineraries, sights, accommodation, restaurants, car related events etc.

I live in Charleston, SC which now has direct BA flights from LHR opening up, albeit on Thu and Sun from April to October at the moment. Charleston is a great city to start from after say a days rest. The Smokey Mountains and Tail of the Dragon are about a days drive away, Charlotte NASCAR speedway, Road Atlanta, Hilton Head Concours, all within easy driving times.

As for cars I am initially thinking something like a 1990's Mercedes 500 SL or Porsche 911/Boxster. Aircon is a must for most of the year in the South East. My initial concerns are how insurance works, and the big issue of what if something goes wrong with the car while its in use.

Thoughts? Pitfalls?

Wouldn't Turo save you the bother of dealing with insurance etc - you wouldn't even need to own a car, just use other people's. Then you're basically a holiday concierge, so what's the value add?

Cars wise id want the full American experience. So muscle cars charger camero viper or some older stuff. Your knowledge of the area is great to give tough ideas for people to do on a daily basis without being too strict on planned but no fun. I think you'd find it's quite a big potential market offering the American road trip experience .

I agree.

My wife and I are planning just this trip in our 25th Wedding Anniversary year.

We were planning to buy a muscle car RestoMod, drive it across the States for a while and then ship it back, but if we could do it temporarily instead that could be interesting.
