Just got the family wagon back from a service. Before it went in, the infotainment system had started flashing a blue and red screen of death with the message:

Emergency Download
No suitable update found. Please insert valid update!.
Will reset now.

I was hoping a simple OS type re-flash and it would be working. VW say no. Price for a new Discover Media Gen 2 5F unit - £4279.64!

So the dealer suggests chop it in for a new car. Hmm, it's an option but not one I like. I think this should be a 'swap the 5F unit in the glove box out' and we'll make do for now. Has anyone done this and can advise if it's straight forward (2nd hand unit off ebay and straight swap)? Or, is it more involved with needing any configuration to interface with air con / parking sensors and the like.

I'm guessing that taking the unit apart and replacing a broken hard disk (as an example) isn't possible as I can't see anywhere to download a software image, or again, am I wrong?

Could possibly be a big headache, have you thought about going down the Alpine route. They seem to do alot of VW specific installs.

It’s a crap head unit anyway, biggest waste of £1000+ that I’ve ever spent.

On the T6 the Disco unit is coded to the vehicle, no way of removing that lock as far as I know.

I’d look at the latest Kenwood for £1000 and it’ll integrate nicely with all the mfsw, sensors and cameras etc.
