Running Rough ... HELP

Car was running fine until I took it to get the oil seal below the dizzy replaced.

Its now running rough at idle, cutting out when pulling off...... coughing and spluttering at speed....

Spent half a day playing around with it...

Fitted new ditributer cap and rotor arm.... still the same.

Undid cleaned an reconnected a lot of electrical bits n pieces on the coil side of the engine ..... still the same.

Swapped TP for Cerbera 4.2 one... still the same (swapped back to original as all know my thaughts on the Cerbie TP).

I am now at a loss.......... The new owner desperatly wants to get his hands on the car.... and looks like I am going to have to delay it longer whilst car goes into the garage.

HELP.... ideas please

I assume the work on the seal was done professionally, did it come back from the garage like that? If so I'd take a pretty dim view of being given the car back in that state without an explanation. It seems distinctly likely that it's something that was caused by the work, and even if it wasn't I'd expect a credible explanation to convince me it wasn't their fault. So I'd start by asking them to investigate the problem FOC as a goodwill gesture, on the basis that it is *probably* something they've caused.

If you want to pursue the DIY route, I'd put a passive strobe on the king HT lead and confirm the ignition strength and timing. But I don't think the DIY route is your best bet at this stage.

Are all the plug leads fully home at both ends ?

Yep all plugs and leads firmly in position.

The car was fine when I picked it up from the garage yesterday morning. It was in the evening when I took it down the shops it started acting acting up.

I am just wondering if the 2 are connected..... maybe they have knocked something or a cable is loose..... but I think I must have dis connected and reconnected every cable in the vacinaity...

Hooo hummm..... I'll try and get it booked in tomorrow

If they replaced the seal below the dizzy I presume they had to take the dizzy out, did they re-tighten the clamp bolt afterwards?

If they didn't it could allow the dizzy to rotate and the timing would be out.

I agree with Colin - this sounds as if the dizzy is wrong. Only a few degrees will do this. Check with a timing light? Or just move it a bit and see if it's better or worse (mark it first so you can always put it back to the start!). Long story but did something like this on a Range Rover, similar result.

Steve does sound like the dizzy may have slipped/come lose.

Well its back to the garage tomorrow to get sorted....
if they cant sort it a local PH (not sure if he wants to be named) is going to try and get me in with the local Granade/Scorpio with a bit of Q jumping

Yep...... dizzy not put back properly.

Garage was very apologetic.

I popped over to day with some road legal number plates for the MOT and took her out for a spin whilst I was there to make sure all is ok

Pick her up Saturday morning ..... and will be sadly saying goodbye early Sat evening
