Can anyone confirm when the spark plugs should be changed on a uk car according to VW?
Is it 40 or 60k miles ? (Have had conflicting answers)

Thanks

Thanks - you've just given me a 3rd option.

Figuring this service schedule out seems much harder than it ought to be. Isn't there a VW website where I can see the service schedule by age / mileage to get a definitive answer?

As it stands one VW garage has told me I only need an oil service, yet its on time and (or) distance and so I thought it needs an inspection service every year.

Even the car has a different view, as that says it needs an oil service and an inspection service, but thought an inspection service included an oil service.

Pretty sure it was 60k on my Cupra.

I changed mine at about 15k because I wanted to, fitted the newest revision coilpacks and also Audi plus from an RS7 if I remember correctly. But I was running Stage 2.

It does my head in and I’ve yet to experience a VW dealer who understands the schedule.

Assuming Golf R is same as more ordinary models then on time and distance spark plug change is 40K/4yrs. Service schedule from new is oil / oil & inspection / oil / major.

Where it gets particularly confusing is once the car is 4yrs old VW switch to alternating minor and major services but the plugs (or diesel filter) are still only every 4 yrs but dealers quote the same whether they change them or not.

On the oil service all dealers will do their own vehicle health check so you’re effectively getting an inspection anyway.

Fellow R owner, Only had the car a few months but the full service is every 2 years or 20k miles (whichever comes sooner) and the minor service is every year or 10k miles( whichever sooner) so it’s a minor service followed by a full service the year after and repeat! This means plugs should be changed every 2 years or 20k miles not every 4 years or 40k miles that would be silly! The dsg service should be done every 40k! Only bought my car back in June from dealer, apparently the haldex was done, funny that had the car checked over by a tuner last week filter was blocked up and full of gunk! All dealer does is top up fluids! Get friendly with a VAG specialist and have them look after you mate!

My service book says the car should have an oil change service after 1st 10k miles / I year, then an inspection after 20k miles / two years, but thereafter an inspection every 20k miles or 1 year.

For me that means an inspection every year as it does less than 20k miles a year.

So far so good 😐

I’ve owned the car from new and it’s actually had an inspection every year, and had the extras the same VW garage has recommended. It’s a manual so no DSG to worry about but all VW asked to date was pollen filter at 2nd service and brake fluid at 3rd service (I did haldex oil change myself at 3rd service so that I could clean the filter which VW wouldn’t do).

The confusing piece is that the service book does not state what and when the additional work items are supposed to be.

I’ll try again with VW but I was expecting this service info to be written down / available. After all how do people who use independent VW garages demonstrate they have complied with the service schedule to maintain warranty etc if it’s not published anywhere?

I’d personally stick with the schedule I said mate, I only do 10k miles a year if that, I generally always done a full service inc plug change within 2 years though closer to one. All is do is wait for Euro car parts to do a 50% off deal buy all the bits and have my mechanic fit them, won’t be more than 200 quid after paying mechanic and I know exactly what’s inside my car and still cheaper than main dealer

Also the 330 was quite accurate mate, r-tech Nuneaton smile

My R is an 18 and had an oil service some time ago. I have now done 33k and the computer hasn’t yet said anything re another service. I did have a couple of services on my last R and didn’t have plugs changed in 3 years of ownership.

Wouldn’t rely on computer mate as that’s just inputted and set by someone, you can set it to alert after 100k miles if that’s your thing lol sure the car can run happily run after however many intervals without any major issues, all depends how much you like your car, and how much you want to look after your engine. I personally daily my car and I own it, if I leased it I wouldn’t give a monkeys and be taking it to a backstreet garage if and when

Mine is leased. They set the computer and so when I hand it back it will say how many miles are left to a service (and it may have had a service before then if the computer asks me to service it)

Fair play mate, it’s down to them whatever intervals they set it at then. You’ve got a year old car wouldn’t worry about it too much, mine is a 2016 so I need to be more mindful
