Simple really: I need a new laptop. Must be a solid performer for day-to-day business tasks, SSD is a must-have, (no need for video editing or high-powered gaming capability), look sleek and have lowish weight.
What recommendations do you have? £500 max price. Thanks.
I was pretty close to buying one of these the other day until I realised my 7 year old Fujitsu is still working fine. What recommendations do you have? £500 max price. Thanks.

8GB Ram, 256GB SSD, Full HD screen, Ryzen 5 which has similar benchmarks to an i5.
Only reason not to I guess is if you only buy Intel.

To answer a few questions:
Has to be new - need the warranty.
Day-to-day activity includes, preparing Word docs, PowerPoint, Excel. Using Photoshop to create/edit images (not overly complex, no video). Web browsing and use of various web-apps. Web conference calls.
14 inch would be fine. Have been looking at a Asus Vivobook 14 i5 but it's £100 over budget.

I picked-up a well spaced HP laptop from Costco for £480 a few weeks back, it was on a deal I think it is normally £520ish. They give an extra year warranty so two years. Similar model was retailing at £650 elsewhere including on-line. Worth a look if you are a member, possibly worth joining if not.

Well I can't see you're going to get a new laptop with NBD warranty for £500 & if you have to send it away you'll be without it for a couple of weeks at least.Personally I'd buy two refurbished Lenovos or Dells from ebay & have a hot working spare. I've given up buying new PCs & laptops, it's just not really worth the extra cost. Buy cheap & treat them as disposable.
I bought a HP Pavilion a year ago - Ryzen 5 APU, 256 SSD, 15" thin and light for £495 from John Lewis (I think). Only thing it's missing (for me) is a backlit keyboard. Really please with it so far; very dependable, nothing has bent or broke. Same couldn't be said for the 2 Dell Inspirions I bought off the outlet prior to that, both of which had MBs fubar themselves and got sent back sharpish. Shame as I've have great Dell laptops in the past.

As a few of said, buy used, I've always had new PC's but wanted to use my work docking set up that i have at home so needed a HP Elitebook or pro book, they are £1k plus to buy new, anyhow work wouldn't give me an old one so went on eBay and got an elite book G3 850 with 8bg ram and normal HDD for £207.
I spend £31 on a new SSD, £34 on some more ram and i now have an 18 month old I5 with 256SSD and 16gb ram, I fresh installed windows pro and its not got a mark on it.
When I logged the PC with HP its said it had 17 months HP warranty left too.

We have Lenovos. I know zip about laptops but assumed anything new will be way better than what have and so specs were pretty unimportant.
So, I went to Currys and tried out all the keyboards. I liked the Lenovo best, plus it has a hinge that folds the laptop 'inside out' and a touchscreen. Job done

This is certainly an interesting approach and if the laptop was for me I'd definitely consider it. However, laptop is for my wife (running a small business) and I don't want to get the blame when something goes wrong...I spend £31 on a new SSD, £34 on some more ram and i now have an 18 month old I5 with 256SSD and 16gb ram, I fresh installed windows pro and its not got a mark on it.

I would look for a 2nd hand laptop on ebay, My MSI is a good few years old but has a 4k UHD screen, 32GB ram, 3tb 2.5" HDD plus slots for 3 x mSATA drives (2 occupied giving 512/256GB), has a GTX 980M GPU and i7 4910mq. You wont get that for £500 but should get something similar with lower specs but scope to upgrade
