I have a lovely watch my wife gave me on our wedding day, which I wear every day at work and most evenings out etc. However, I fancy a weekend watch and something a little more casual for when I’m dressing down or perhaps away on holiday - I’m sure it’s a common brief / subject.

So far I’m looking at G Shocks

TW Steel

Or, one of these

Does anyone have any experiences with any of these, or considerations for me? Or even any suggestions for other watches?

I have a lesser value G-Shock (£60) which i have worn pretty much solidly for the past 6 years (have replaced the strap mind) - The only criticism i have is that the light is rubbish - its pretty much useless , so take that into account if your going for one.

For a cheap hassle free watch the GW-M5610 G Shock is pretty much unbeatable at the price point. Radio controlled accuracy & solar powered, so it's always ready to go when needed and not so huge as the analogue G-shocks tend to be.

If I was going for an Analogue / Automatic watch I'd be looking at Seiko SKX's

I've got a Steinhart Ocean One. Quite robust, casual on the metal bracelet but can dress it up with a nato bond strap too.

The purests (snobs?) will hate the brand but I love mine.

Might be worth a shout?

What I came to post.
I've one of these and can't fault it.
I don't care what anyone else thinks, it's me wearing it.

What model is it? It sounds like you might need a battery replacement or the light is faulty (assuming it isn't one of the original G shocks with the rubbish backlights.

The light uses a lot of battery life, but it should glow brightly.

Access to the light button on the 5600 models though isn't the best.

Seiko Automatic? Something like this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seiko-Analogue-Automatic-...

I have a Stargate II which is a few years old now. Never misses a beat and more accurate than my more expensive watches.

Edited to say..just like Andy Tims said!

Victorinox are worth a look at that price point.

Their I.N.O.X. range are ridiculously tough.

‘Only’ a quartz but nicely finished!

I bought the smaller Steinhart Ocean One a year ago after agonising for ages and having a budget of thousands. I’m so so pleased with it. Great value and similar age models sell on eBay for 75% of what I paid so in reality it’s cost me no more than a plastic Casio.

Bulova Lunar Pilot?

With an email sign up discount from Samuels or the like you could pick one up for less than £400

Why not something a bit more unusual / interesting?

Automatic movement, nice design, decent strap etc - and a few interesting other models on their website :

https://www.richardlegrand.com

...and change out of your £400 too.

Bit of a left field choice, and they’re tricky to actually get hold of because the owner only releases them in small batches, but have a look at HELM.

https://helmwatches.com/index.html

Every review I have seen absolutely raves about the things and they’re well within budget.

I think you have to sign up to email alerts and then the owner lets you know when he actually has stock for sale.

Really great input and ideas, thank you everyone. My main watch is silver and shiny, so my preference is something very different, hence some of my suggestions, however many of yours are very good too. I will update you all once I make a purchase. Thank you all again!

Have you looked at the Hamiltons? It’s a dull looking post, but full of quality content.

With this brief I'd be raiding ebay for a Zelos. I sold my Helmsman 2 in bronze for just over 400.

Sadly, the days of the 400 quid Squale 1521 are behind us, but might be worth looking out for one.
