I have a small office, probably spend 3k per yr on 4 phone lines, 5 handsets. My commercial deal is up and I am inundated by calls from BT local business, seems many different people.

They always ask me what I spend, now if they were full on BT they would know that, I assume they are re sellers but they swear blind that they work for BT.

Am I better off dealing direct with BT proper or are they legit and best people to deal with?

they're independent in terms of business type , a bit like a dealer, they have the 'franchise' for the local area you're in and are allowed to call themselves BT, can be frustrating trying to sidestep them!

I would avoid BT altogether. Many better comms companies out there. pm me if you want any recommendations.

I’m amazed that anyone uses BT for comms especially smaller businesses

Zen for internet and pipe your voice through some sort of IP solution, voipfone is a recommendation.

If you need something more advanced than voipfone switch to hosted 3CX

Save yourself the aggro

Several years ago I briefly worked with the engineers who install the equipment. The engineers are fine but sales miss sold all too often (IMO). The wrong equipment was delivered to the customers premises and or parts missing all too often.

For my sins, I worked in BT sales in the 90s then was a director of a BTLB (local business) from 2003-2007. Targets always only ever pushed upwards hence mis-selling is a big complaint. The BT "brand" was supposed to work in your favour. Actually a lot of the time it didnt.
There are lots of small independent businesses that cover IT and Telecoms very well, do your search and you shall be fine.
PM me for details if you wish, I may be able to help.
