Hi all, new to the forum world.
Just wanted some help from you guys, I Never really had a Volkswagen except from my current car which is a Audi A3 Tdi 2012

I was thinking of buying the Golf R very soon, but stuck in a dilemma.
Should I buy a used Golf R? - my target is to go for the 2016-2018 model DSG upto 30k-40k miles on the clock and keeping it for around 3 years
The R being the mileage it is, what should I look out for maintenance wise, around that mileage would there be any replacements or leaks or problems or any issues that’ll occur or even the necessary things to that are required to change by certain miles

I’ve had my fair share of issues with my Audi and would really need a golf r that’s reliable giving me no issues that’ll cost me a fortune.

What would be your opinion on buying a used Golf R for that mileage? Or should I play it safe and buy a brand new one?

Thanks everyone smile

Well, I do have a drive with secure gates. Not sure if that’s good enough with the amount of theft stories I’ve heard from people who own the Golf r

Never had any bother with mine when I had it. Left it overnight in car parks and all sorts.

Stories of R thefts are slightly exaggerated on here. smile

I’m in the same boat. Got some offers from carwow which are tempting and going to book a test drive end of the month.
I read somewhere that the 2019 one is a bit slower than 2018
Second hand prices still seem quite strong.

I wanted manual but heard the clutches are chocolate. 4 wheel drive system is due at 40k. If that has been neglected it’s mega bucks. Other than that expect brakes etc to be bit more expensive.

From what I understand the theft issue is much more prevalant if it has keyless entry. The systems that VAG use seem to be the easiest to fool.

The excellent and far more involving 'manuel' is the gearbox of choice and quite rare especially as a 3 door. The clutches are strong and like the huge number of thefts this is purely largely internet folklore.

BCA have a huge selection of 1 2 3 year old ex lease and finance vehicles and whilst many are poverty spec there are quite a few with decent spec which sell at below trade prices given the huge supply. So don't pay stupid money for overpriced dealer tat most of which has been bought at auction anyway.

I bought a late 2018 7.5R with only DSG, Pearlescent White paint and winter pack as options 2nd hand in May this year.

For £26k with 4500 miles it was no more expensive than similar spec GTi's.

They need simple oil and filter service every 10k, same plus Haldex service every 20k and same plus DSG service every 40k.

Mine does 25-30 mpg if stuck in town all the time and up to 40 mpg on long runs and can easily do a there and back 400+ mile trip to my parents place without refuelling doing 75 or so on the Motorways.

I'm a little cautious where I park it but it doesn't have keyless, has the standard wheels and is very bland and anonymous so I'm not too concerned about it attracting attention. They do seem to lose quite a bit of value in year 2 and 3 especially if you pile the miles on so it's worth keeping an eye on prices for a while before you buy.

The standard kit is very, very good on the Mk 7.5 so I wouldn't worry about "poverty spec" models. DCC is a great option if you can find one with it but the standard suspension is pretty good on the 18" wheels anyway.

Mines on 10.5k now and just had its first service, so far fingers crossed no issues.
