Hi there,
I have an Iphone X Max. We are off on our first holiday for 18 years without children (can't wait!). We are going to St Lucia and I would like to do some snorkelling and kayaking whilst there and wonder if there is a case that I can buy that will keep my phone safe when in or near water? I know its waterproof to a certain depth but don't really want to risk it. Can anyone help? Thanks smile

I’ve used one similar to the above before, but it had three ziplocks then it rolled up and velcroed shut. Doesn’t seem to be any that style on eBay, but there are tons for a couple of quid. Just search for “waterproof phone pouch”.

If I was taking my phone in the water on a canoe etc I used to use a couple of ziplock bags inside each other and put it in my pocket. Obv you’ve got to let the air out of the bags before closing them otherwise they’re like balloons. hehe

If you’re unsure just put some paper in one and try it out in the bath before you go.

For longer open water swimming I use a float like this that you can put stuff in that also hopefully stops drudged up or drunk people driving a boat or jet ski over me.

The iPhones now look pretty waterproof though. There’s videos of people testing them on the seabed (obviously not that deep) for hours or even days.

I use one of these when I'm sailing; they're really good and just big enough to keep keys etc in as well. They do float and are completely waterproof – mine has been tested!

Seen a few tests of people taking waterproof phones in pools and they last pretty well, even none waterproof phones (OnePlus 7T for example) have lasted.

I used my X and XSMax extensible in the sea and pools on a few holidays without any issue at all. It's designed for this purpose and won't suffer any I'll effects for it.

I’ve seen it on YouTube and obv read about others doing it but there’s STILL something ingrained in my mind that makes me uncomfortable about taking a phone into the sea or pool and submerging it. hehe

I get that.

They do take good photos underwater though

It’s only waterproof if it’s as it left the factory. If it’s slightly bent or anything has happened that affects its “waterproofness” then it’ll be fked. Get a case as insurance as the downside isn’t worth it.

this 100%. My iPhone xs died in very little water. It was only 4 months old, cased from new and not dropped. I don't put it in my back pocket or abuse it. within a few hours of being in shallow water it stopped responding. I think it was £600 approx for a swap out in the Apple shop. Apple geek explained its only water proof the day it left the factory in most perfect conditions.
