Afternoon.

I am looking for a bike engine for a project and am struggling for one that will meet all the requirements, so what better place to ask...

It needs to be the below, or as close to:

Shaft Drive
Water Cooled
Carburetors
Not IL4
More than 100 bhp (or close to)
Whole bike ideally less than £1500

Chain drive is a possibility but creates a few issues of its own, the not IL4 part is the desire for it to be more roar than whoosh (not to get too technical).

Preference is to buy the whole bike and then sell unused parts as opposed to buy just the engine.

Any suggestions gratefully received, virtual pint and £20 to the chosen charity of the "winner".

ST1100 pan european? Seems to tick all of the virtual boxes, 100bhp, carbs, shaft drive, v4, and you can pick them up cheap as chips (whole working bike on ebay for under £1300)

Those with anything like 100bhp don't have carbs

The only thing that I think will tick the boxes. Why the requirement for carbs?

BMW K100 series.
IL 4 but along the bike not across and has EFI.
Donor bikes are cheap and the EFI is easy to rearrange using the original ecu or a separate standalone unit

I think you'll struggle with all your requirements unless you go for an older GS1150 unit.

Crash damage Goldwing? Would be quite broken for the cash but some of the 1500s may be old enough for carbs?

Many thanks for all the suggestions, I will do some more research and then start looking at eBay/Gumtree.

The only other one we came up with was a Firestorm, which would be ideal except for the chain drive.

The thinking behind carbs. is that because the engine will be used outside the bike it will be easier to set up with fewer electrics. If this is not peoples experiences I am happy to be corrected.

Bulletproof engine, but nowhere near 100bhp I think.

Injectors all day long for me. More reliable, less maintenance/regular tinkering required and it's only really the ecu you'll need and some loom. I guess it's what you're comfy with. If you go injection, just make sure you get loom/ecu with it. What's it going in?

If Kit car, bear in mind you can get gearbox conversions, I looked at an MNR Vortex way back and am pretty sure it wasn't running chain. They had various engine options, the Rotax Aprilia V-Twin is dry sumped for example which may be a bonus?!

Tough set of criteria.

Early BMW Boxers are air cooled, later ones are electronic ignition.
BMW K100 and Yamaha XJ900 are IL4's
Early Goldwings were I think a flat 4 and later flat 6 but probably pretty expensive.
Was the Suzuki Intruder (V twin) shaft drive?

And the sort of winner is.... this. Also what we had come up with, if you want to pick a charity let me know and I will make the donation.

However! After finding what looks like an excellent chain diff. with inboard brakes (which will solve all manner of problems at a later date) chain drive is back on the table, and even preferable.

With the original criteria (carbs, not IL4, cheapish) the hunt is now on for a project Firestorm.

If anyone knows of a tatty runner or project can they please let me know?

Virtual pint and charity donation as before.

Thanks
