thinking about MK V Golf GTi - any advice pls?
Discussion
as per title and having a good read of the buyers guide https://www.pistonheads.com/news/general/volkswage... -
I'm thinking about a MK V Golf GTi. I've seen what looks to be a decent one advertised - 2008 120K VW FSH (11 stamps) Leather (I would have preferred Tartan for novelty value) under £4K etc.
Any buying or ownership advice before I book an appointment to view the car?
I'm assuming 120K with FSH should not be an issue as long as its looked after? Any mandatory or advised service requirements that should be looked for or considered for this kind of mileage?
My current car has 127K and perfect, so I have no issues with higher mileage on a looked after car.
Thanks!

I'm about to sell my mk5 GTI - grown out of it with 2 kids + dog but owned it for 3 years (which is a long time for us to have a car!) and its been absolutely brilliant.
Things to watch out for:
- rusty wings. VW are a PITA to deal with in my experience so just bought 2 new pattern pre-painted ones off ebay for about £180 and fitted them myself.
- cam follower. If theres no record of it being done in the last 40k miles, do it. £40 for the genuine part with new o-rings and bolts and about 30 minutes for a novice (ie, me) to fit.
- cloudy headlights can be refurbed easily although I'd look for xenons if buying again
- loom into the boot can get worn by the hinges. Can be replaced/soldered and re-taped.
- some of the interior trim is/was covered by a rubbery kinda coating which wears easily but can be replaced.
- DSG service (if applicable) every 40k miles
Overall, its been a brilliant car and we did actually think about replacing it with a newer/better spec one (ours is an 06) but need something we can easily lob the dog in the boot of etc.
Day to day its perfect and still plenty fast enough for spirited driving in D, so much so I can count the number of times I've driven it in Sport on the fingers of one hand but when you do it absolutely flies!

Usual suspects of Timing belt, cam follower and diverter valve.
Cycle the air con as the pump bearings can get noisy and are not cheap to replace.
Good service history is a must, especially the dsg.
Really enjoyed mine but had to sell to fund another project, would own another but its difficult to find good ones.
Slightly higher mileage not a problem if service history is good.

Went to see it this afternoon, had a goo look around, test drive, haggle and left a deposit!
Will be next week before its ready, needs a wheel bearing, brake pads, Mot, service etc and 2 front tyres (expecting cheap chinese s
te for tyres....)
Just need to flog the 520d SE now (its in the classifieds) ;-)
