Hi Burnie

I think, in the first instance, a well cared for Chimaera 450 would be your best bet into TVR ownership.
I think the perfect step up from the excellent S2000 would be a Tamora, but out of your budget, but a Chim 450 will give you many laughs, it sounds and goes great!

You could get a 5 litre Chimaera for that money. If you buy a 4 or 4.5 you'll always be thinking - "Hmmmm - wonder what a 5 would be like?"

I've seen some CAT D Tuscans going for that sort of money, although running costs may be an issue, but a well sorted Chim 450 I would second.

No, provided you get a well sorted one and look after it properly (it's a more 'hands on' ownership experience than the S2000), you should get many years of reliable service.

Service intevals are 6,000 miles, fuel costs are high (circa 11-18mpg) and as with the S2k, tyres get eaten quickly.

You're looking at a well-sorted Griff, Chim, S or earlier for your sort of cash. Go and have a look and drive a few before buying. I went for a 4 litre Chim in the end (I found it easier to hustle around the twisties and it seemed to suit my driving style), but they're all top cars

It may be worth employing the services of someone such as Rob Ingleby or James Agger, who offer an inspection and car finder service.

You'd be well advised to hold back a £1k-£2k slush fund in case anything does go wrong in a big way.

Hi thanks for input, can't believe i could be looking at Trev,Can you drive them hard like track days and stoleen cars,as thats the way an S2000 was driven!!

As regard to hands on what do you mean Service yourself replace bits yourself as i know how a spanner works, but its the cost of bits is the issue!,What type of engine do they use Rover ford what??

I sorted most of my s2k probs my self so i do hope a trev will be the same ! Burnie.

I've got a Griff 500, nothing to beat it in my view, with respect to the others.

Personally I think the most important things to look out for are a chassis that isn't rusty (the coating is rubbish, have a good prod around underneath) and an engine that has been well serviced with lots of bills to prove it. The engine is very strong but only if it has been well maintained.

You'll find it a lot easier to work on than the S2000 apart from those two in my view, as the engineering is simple but elegant in its way. I find it quite satisfying to do the small maintenance tasks/improvements but always take it to a dealer to service. Others do it themselves.

You can certainly hammer it on track days, its based on a racing car after all and comes alive when drive hard, but be careful until you get used to it. That isn't meant to be patronising, just that the torque combined with the racecar setup means that they feel very different on the edge, especially in the wet and too many people (me included) only find that out once they are over the edge. I was lucky, others aren't.

And before anyone else tells you, if you seriously want to buy then get 'The Bible' first from www.tvrbooks.co.uk/. The site has got FAQs etc.

Best of luck.

PS You aren't DustyC are you, I don't think the rest of us could bear another search...

Not being harsh but are you honestly prepared to spend 18K on a car recommended by total strangers on a website. We are all different we all like different things.Go out and look at and drive as many TVRs as you can.But they won't be built like a Honda and if you are going to bray the backside off the car yes they will break like most cars.

Burnie, as a Chimaera 4.0 owner since February, I can say that once you buy one of these cars you will always be looking out of your window at it.

The car practically begs you to drive it at every opportunity, if you don't believe me you should know that every single person (I'm not kidding) that I drive past also feels the same way.

They all point and stare, smile, shout nice things (not one nasty thing said yet), and generally are JEALOUS AS HELL that I'm driving such a nice car.

They're awesome mate. Need looking after, but awesome. Get a good one, and you will never, ever regret it.

I agree 100%, they are just lovely, and even with the occassional niggle they are a joy to own. Had mine 3 years with very few hitches. Regular servicing and home maintenance plus waxoyling etc keeps it running beautifully. In fact its more reliable than my Ka.

Try not to kill yourself, Any v8 TVR has a hell of a lot more torque than an S2000 at much lowere revs.

If you don't change you driving style, from a hig reving lowish torq car, to a hig torque, low revs, Lighter car, and just BOOT a TVR you will eventually die especailly in the wet,

Not being patronising, as stuffed firstgriff backwards in a ditch after 3 days of ownership, whilst (i thought) trying to be careful. MUCH more torque performance than used to.
