The Bulova 214 is a watch I’d really like to add to my collection, but I’m running into problems trying to find the ‘right’ model.

A few recent searches on eBay make me realise that there’s a seemingly infinite variations of the model. Surely they can’t all be correct, there must be some ‘frankenwatches’ out there

I’ve put the image below to show the kind of one I’m after, a simple round case, rather than the square, or even odd-shaped ones - and probably with a leather strap, as I haven’t found one on a bracelet that I like the look of.

Is there anything to look out for, or any info I can read for research on how to find the ‘right’ model

Any help appreciated, I haven’t got much more hair to pull out!

I've got a Spaceview. The seller you found on ebay with the pic above seems to have heaps of info on all his sales and his watches tend to go for good money. Loads of info here:

As for originality I'm not sure it matters! All the Spaceviews you find are going to be replacement parts because they were never an official Bulova factory model. They're very cool watches - an interesting technological dead-end and a sweeping second hand so get one you like!

It can be impossible to tell the difference between a factory original, a period dealer conversion and a modern conversion.
On the other hand, if it doesn't have a chapter ring, I think you can say for certain that it's a modern conversion.
Plenty of brain soothing fodder here:

Thanks for the replies everyone, I reckon from the 2 links I should probably put aside my purist intentions and buy the model I like the best.

Even the websites suggest that originality doesn’t really matter, they’re hardly a priceless antique, so it looks like I should just follow my heart!

Appreciate the info chaps, I shall report back when I obtain the humming tuning fork!
