Yellow Box - Suzuki Ignis Sport, Co-owned Track & Project
Discussion
Hello PH, Thought I would share our Yellow Track/Project/Rally Box I co-own with a few friends.
We got the car a month or so ago when a friend of mine who owned it moved and needed to sell it. I always liked the car, it's a mad little pocket rocket that always puts a smile on your face. It's loud in volume and colour. It's a homologation car from the JWRC in the early 2000s. We all wanted a fun project and track car we are embracing its silliness with the livery. When we got the car it just had the big Suzuki Logos on the front and sides so we added the rally branding logos to try to match the JWRC cars.
About the Yellow Box
2004 Suzuki Ignis Sport, 1.5L, 110hp, 910kg or less
It yellow, like the rally cars with livery like the JWRC cars
Recaro Fishnets Buckets
Ronal Turbo wheels
Fully Adjustable Coilovers
Cone Filter
Perspex rear window
Some kind of loud exhaust
Currently state of it:
We had a few cooling issues which seem to have been fixed with a new Rad. Water pump about to go in it as well.
New JDM bulbs and headlight restore, they where literally candles.
New pads and tyres also just went on, we went for Toyo Proxes TR1.
We have our first track day this week at Castle Combe so we'll see how that goes.
Here is what the car looks like as of today:

Top of Zig Zag Hill, Dorset. Car was overheating.. good job I had 5L of water in the back.

This is the JWRC car from the early 2000s that we had for inspiration to copy the branding and livery stuff. The livery was a factory option, when we got the car it only had the big Suzuki Motorsport Logos.

Post engine cleanup, AC pipes have now gone.

Before and After windoe tidy up, just bought some black vinyl from homebase and a very sharp knife.

New and Old Rad... so munted.

No idea what this is... but its cool.

Car comes with Recaro Fishnets standard, I should have taken a front pic.

It stands out

Thanks for reading, looking forward to its first track day this week... more to come.

The Yellow box just did its first (with us) track day! not without issues!
Coolant issues... well actually exhaust gas going into the coolant issues. It seems the car pushes coolant into the overflow at high revs, it's not too much right now. We did short stints of around 10/15mins, come in cooled the car down and poured the coolant back into the radiator. Bit of a shame its happening could be the head gasket or the block not sure yet.
On Track: The car was absolutely brilliant on track, the grip was just amazing. I had to absolutely throw the thing in on the limit to get anything to break traction, the rear breaks out first on this wet track it just had so much grip. The brand new Toyo proxies, Brembo pads and Coilover were just epic on the track. I felt like the car was quicker than everything that wasn't a racecar in the corners but obviously left for dust on the straights. Had an absolute blast in this thing can't wait for the next one.
As for the engine issue, not sure if we're going to try to find a new engine, upgrade it to something more powerful or fix the head gasket and hope that it gets solved. We all love this car and want to keep it rolling and ready for the track.
Images of the car on track: This was sighting lap, so no helmet needed.

Re cooling issues if the expansion bottle smells of fuel. Its blowing exhaust gases past the gasket. Either a cracked or slipped liner or gasket issue.
Easy fixes are to try a new Rad Cap and Thermostat if there is no fuel smell in the bottle after a spirited run.
Absolutely loved mine. I had 6 over three years in various states of chavness.
If you can track one down. Look for a m18a 1.8 engine out of a aus spec liana. Use the block with the m15a ignis sport head.
More common options are swift sport m16a engine you have to either use ignis intake manifold or chop the swift intake to miss the brake master & run ignis ecu (look for a jdm ecu as they are plug & play and unlease around 7hp over the UK ecu)

We're having debates about this now, wish we could find out if its the gasket or block easily. Not sure if we should just try put a new head gasket in and hope that it fixes it.
Or just drive the engine until it goes and replace with something else the same or different engine... hard decision.
The JDM ECU thing is interesting, I know the ecu is tuned for super as well not that I've ever put any in.

Hi,
Can’t believe ive stumbled across this thread, do you still have the car?? I used to own this car, was my pride and joy, I had all the graphics custom done for the car (was a few more back then) had the exhaust put on the car, had different wheels on it too
Love to see this, hopefully you can get some more info from eachother! Can’t believe ive stumbled across this thread, do you still have the car?? Instead of tracking these I think they are a far better budget way of getting into amateur rallying. They really are strong little cars. My friends first track car was one of these and they were painfully slow compared to the rest. I have one as a daily driver and it is fantastic in that respect and it just loves b roads and you can thrash the nuts off it and not lose your licence.
