Had a rocker gasket fitted ( due to oil leak) and new plugs had this due to a misfire on number 4 had it done and the mech found a faulty fuel injector so I bought a second hand one he fitted after 7 days the fault returned misfire on number 4 so I phoned him he said it’s because of I bought a second hand injector I asked him if he calibrated it he said no there was no need to I’ve since been told your surposed to calibrate so now I have bought a new one at the cost of 196 pounds and a new coil ( as bmw) said it would be wise to change as well now having a problem getting someone to fit as bmw prices and some of the mobile mech prices for labour are expensive. Is this right about calibration of injectors ?

Calibration of injectors is not unheard of - but can you clarify what car / year / engine we are discussing?

n53 engine.

Hope the injector you bought was index 11. Although, if the others are sub index 9 that in itself might cause problems as not supposed to mix wildly different index numbers, though many do without issue.

And yes, they are supposed to be coded to the DME when fitted.

Sounds like the mechanic doesn't know much about these engines.

If you mention where I the country you are I’m sure someone here will be able to recommend someone.l near to you.

If u don’t mind me asking- how much have you been quoted to fit one injector that you deem to be too expensive?

I presume they will feel anything over £30 will be too expensive given they wanted to supply their own used part.

A new injector needs a new decoupling element too.

Iam in Watford. And the silly remark from someone who said because I bought the parts I’ll expect it for 30 pounds did you get out of the bed the wrong way or are you allways so arrogant? First of all I bought the parts because I know what I need and second it means I do not have to wait for the mech to order them and have to wait I hope that makes you feel better mr pleasant ... and the quotes were 180 175 and 150 as a self employed electrician. I do understand and labour. And have been a spark for over 45 years. And run my own company. ...

So if someone purchased a second hand consumer unit and asked you to fit it and a few days later they call you up and said the electric keeps going off what would you say ....

The problem is you purchased a used injector that you supplied and then you questioned the mechanic, your justification being you could get the part quicker. Normally you can get injectors same day or at the very least next day. It has nothing to do what side I got out of bed but when you start supplying used parts you are always buying the unknown, had you got the mechanic to remove the injectors and send them off for testing you would know if it was an injector issue or something else. Instead you consult the internet questioning your mechanic who fitted a used part you supplied.

I'm sure in 45 years you have seen your fare share of cock ups by customers and have often thought they could have saved money and had less hassal if they had left it to someone who knows what they were doing.

Anyway what car/engine is it .... it's not a N53 is it ?

You may also be up against people not wanting to fit customer supplied parts, some do, but a lot don't.

That's often an issue IME.

Anyway OP, it might be worth finding someone on here to sort it for you:- https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

At least they should be familiar with BMW foibles!

2008 3 litre 325i is indeed an N53. As posted above, make sure you have index 11 injectors.

The mech asked me to get the injector. Which I did he told me which one to get as my car was in the garage at the time he needed it quick so I tried euro spares and bmw they said it would have to be ordered. So I bought one on line from a bmw salvage yard and he said it was ok it was him who said my injector was faulty and he said they do not need calibrating anyway I have now bought a new one as for second hand consumer units if it was 18 edition I would fit a second hand one so would most sparks but I would check it first which he should of done and lots of mech I have phoned have asked me do have the injector anyway it’s about opinions we all have one I do work for old pensioners and I only charge for parts. But if they have there own I will fit I have no problem as long as there good enough to fit

Book time to replace 4 injectors is 2.3 hours, most of that will be stripping to gain access, personally I would be quoting 2.5 hours, that’s strip, replace, clean up, clear codes, extended road test, recheck for fault codes. In monetary terms £150.

I would have thought whoever fits the injector should pop the coilpack on for free - after all the engine covers will be off to swap the injector.

The biggest problem is finding a half decent mobile mechanic, have you got breakdown recovery ? can you you not call them out (they don't need to know you already know the issue) get them to scan it, act all surprised and then ask them to recover it in to a garage ?

If not could you drive it to somewhere local or would you rather not risk it ?

Mercs are good but some of the newer stuff has issues with the balance shaft and chains ... having said that most newer stuff seems to have an issue.

If fuel isn't an issue an XK8/R in either coupe or convertible would be a nice way to travel to Spain.
