Audi Lease asking for mileage update

Hi,

Quick question - had an email from Audi finance asking for an update on current mileage (year 2 of 3).

I am well over my mileage allowance but was fully aware of this when I took out the deal. Am I obliged to tell them my mileage?

The car doesn't belong to you, you are renting it from a company, it belongs to that company so if they want to know something about it, just tell them, why wouldn't you?

They will bill you the excess miles. Too many people screwing them over at lease end with high miles vs low agreed within lease and/or just VT ing the car at 50% paid point (if PCP).

Shhhh, don't call it renting, that will really upset some people on here.

Powerfully built company directors don't "rent", they are investing the capital instead of having it tied up in a depreciating asset.

The only reason I possibly wouldn't want to tell them is because I don't want any changes to be made to my monthly payment (which the letter states they would do if required).

The deal I took was at about 4.8p per mile, so every month I have gone over I have put this money aside - I must note there was no sliding scale either. I am expecting a large bill at the end of the term, but I have the money aside for this.

I was stung previously on a 20,000 miles / year lease, Changed jobs and did far less and the less company wouldn't let me adjust this. So on this one, I under egged it to keep things flexible, as the excess mileage charge was reasonable.

I think posters have mentioned the monthly being adjusted after a service, when the mileage gets reported to VWFS.

Started tapping out a reply then realised I still have a Tiguan folder in Outlook.

Here's the response I got from VWFS;

'Thank you for supplying the latest odometer reading from your vehicle. We have updated your agreement with this information and would like to advise that at this point in the contract; we expect the vehicle mileage to be lower than what it is currently. We also predict that if the current usage rate was to continue you would exceed your agreed mileage allowance.

We can offer to increase the contracted mileage allowance and monthly rental amount on your agreement, to avoid an excess mileage charge at the end of the contract. If you would like to do this, please advise us of your new desired overall mileage allowance and we will raise a quote, based on this figure. To ensure the quotation is beneficial, we advise to increase the mileage by at least 5000 miles from what you are currently contracted to.

There is a £60 administration fee should you wish to go ahead with the amendment. However, there is no obligation to amend your contract once quoted.'

I ended up taking their quote as it made sense but, as you can see from their response, you don't have to.

Tricky for them if you are under say the 3 year lease total mileage (say 5k a year so 15k) however if you are already on 20k at end of Year One ...

I recall people saying the extra monthly worked out at around half the excess mileage cost, although the OP seems to have a very low rate already. Any quotes from VWFS seems almost random though.

Yes, that sounds about right.

Unless your contract has a clause stating you're obliged to provide them with an update, or something along the lines of knowingly being in excess of the allocated mileage allowance requires you to update them ... I'd ignore it.

I'd say just tell them you've put the excess mileage aside so even if they ask you for a certain amount now you're covered.

Thanks for the responses.

I am going to let them know the mileage, and will update what comes from that. I will request a quote to change the monthly payment, however I don't expect it to be more competitive than the excess mileage charge.

A colleague of mine made that calculation. Signed up for 10,000 miles a year knowing he'd do nearer 15,000 but having calculated that the even if he did do 15,000 the cost would be the same. Then his wife found out he was about to incur excess charges and insisted he drive their old Renault Clio to work and leave the leased Audi A4 on the drive. Not good for the image when parked alongside the other contractor's Boxsters and M3s.
