Thinking about a Superb iV to replace my current C350e wagon - getting fed up of waiting for Merc to launch the new C300e and don’t really fancy the de version out now as I hate handling the greasy black pump.

I’ve seen the iV prices and specs online which look pretty good value compared to the Merc, great level of standard kit in the L&K model too. A similarly spec’d C will be about £10k more I reckon.

Has anyone driven an iV yet? Any other thoughts? Another option is a billy basic Model 3, but even with the free BiK I’m struggling with a Tesla as I’m really not a fan of the way they drive and the constant updates - just make a finished product and sell it! I’m not much of a BMW fan either and would prefer a wagon again ideally.

The Superb iV hasn’t landed in the UK yet, Skoda dealer I spoke to recently said they were still waiting details themselves.

But I agree, on paper it does look like a decent car.

Is the drivetrain basically the same as the golf GTE?

The Superb appears to have a bigger battery (13kwh vs 8.7 for the Golf).

Im looking at a new company car in July this year and going to test drive the superb hybrid tomorrow.

If all goes well i will be signing up for the L&K version, the spec is pretty impressive coming from a 125d!

I did want the 530e (or failing that the 330e) but the boot space is tiny and with a 2 month old son, the boot in the superb won my Mrs over laugh

Tiny?

How much space do you need to cart around bits for a 2 month old?

Your point?
(Hint: 2 month olds don’t stay 2 months old for long)

We had 2 girls 15 months apart, and even a A4 avant felt small at the time! No chance with a 330e, mine now are 7,6 and 2, so thankfully no prams, so we can manage with something like a 330e, but i would still prefer the impending touring.

Im looking at company cars too, currently, the XC40 hybrid and Pug 508 are up there along with the 330e. the Superb is a great shout, but its dearer than the 330e on our scheme, plus you can only claim 12p per mile (its less than 1400cc), vs 14p per mile for the others on my list. The pug has a very good boot, as does the volvo. The superb is nice but does feel a little sterile inside.

I’ve been trying a few others cars recently too. I had a 508 wagon - like a big, long, low coupe estate. I quite liked the drive but the hybrid is an expensive lease option.

Also tried the new Passat GTE estate in Advance spec. A good square box of a car, almost as roomy as the Superb, bit less rear legroom. Quite flat and dull dash/interior but well finished and screwed together, felt more refined than the Skoda. Best seats of anything I’ve tried recently too. Good ride on the standard suspension, didn’t feel that the adaptive dampers would be necessary. No rear view camera as standard though so I’d add it as an option. Best option I’ve tried so far, but I’m struggling to develop any real desire for a VW.

The car I really want is another C Class hybrid to follow my current C350e but the price of the new model puts it beyond my budget frown in a spec I’d go for with all the driver assist kit (part of my job working with it).

Ive never felt anything for Passats, they take dullness to a new level, i'd rather have a corolla tongue out

The C class is quite expensive on our company scheme aswell, infact the E class hybrid is on a par with. To be fair the W205 is showing its age, the infotainment looks old. I'd be keen to see how the new model will look next year. The Octavia IV and Golf GTE are immininent aswell, so will be worth a look.

If you can wait then there will be lots of new releases by the summer

I really wanted mine sorted before the 125d company lease is up (early July).

I did look at the 508 SW but the monthly prices for the decent specced cars are crackers, they are lovely inside though.

I do really want the 530e, so much so that my Mrs has said to see if we can find one to see what the boot is like compare to the 330e, i know its a little bigger but my Mrs bought a huge silver cross pram which has massive wheels, so you can barely fit anything else in the boot once they are in.

For the money the Superb is a great choice, lets see how it fairs today. I just hope its quick enough but i do need to grow up a little now and should enjoy the lazy / wafty driving... i hope!

My point is fairly obvious I thought, that boot is far from tiny.

Have 2 kids myself so well aware of how it works and remember carting around all of their associated gubbins regularly. What I'm suggesting is if you can't fit what you need in that 530e boot for 1 child then you've made some rather poorly thought out purchases.

Settling for a car you don't really want for 3-4 years just so you have enough boot space to fit in some ridiculously large pram wheels is ridiculous IMHO, but each to their own choices of course.

Totally agree with you and its not my poorly thought purchases, its my wife hehe

The Skoda is £10k cheaper than the 530e though and about £150+ a month more in rental and tax (ish)

I just worry we are being a bit badge snobby, which is why we don't want to like the Skoda.

You like what you like. I'm sure plenty would be very happy with the Skoda but personally I'm like you and would want the 5 series. It's always been the real sweet spot in the BMW range IME (We've had 4 over the years) as a very clear step up from the 3 series in both practicality and quality whilst not being too much more expensive overall.

It's a nicer product than the Skoda as I'm sure everyone will admit, no badge snobbery required.

Your point again?

I think most people would expect a far more expensive car to be the nicer product.

Just not Teslas!

My point? Again I thought it as pretty clear, it's a nicer product and therefore choosing it wouldn't be anything to do with badge snobbery?

On the Tesla thing, depends on your definition of 'nicer'. Our's is considerably faster, cheaper and better equipped than it's competition, which I find quite nice personally. smile

Let's end the T talk right here though as I'm sure everyone will agree we have more than enough of that going on in the forum already.

We coped with a MIni convertible with first child - the Qunny Zap pram even fitted in its ( amazingly ) small boot .
Buy the car you like and live with the boot space I say !

I've found now the kids are older and we do a lot more the rear seat and boot size needs to be large.

Combinations of camping gear, bikes, scooters, body boards, wetsuits, etc in the car. (We had an Octavia VRS Est and now a Kodiaq) big load space is a must for one of the family cars now.

We've always used a bike carrier as for us a better option than trying to fit them in the back (even in a large estate/SUV) and have a roof box for wet/dirty stuff. Both being quickly removable when not required and keep the interior clean, damage free and with plenty of available space.

All good if you have the space to store them when not in use.
