I see in the Telegraph that farmers are suggesting that takeaway containers have the registration number of the car picking them up, printed on, in order to discourage littering.

Howabout we educate/punish the selfish tts who litter?

Top-notch idea. The utter selfishness of the morons that chuck rubbish out of cars needs dealing with.

RFID chips in the packaging might be a way of further automating it.

Brilliant idea.

I'll be sure to set fire to mine before driving off.

Nice idea and a worthy cause but difficult to prove. What if you put the container in the bin but a crafty crow pulled it out again?

Great... then what?

There's a McDonald's drive-thru near me, I probably visit there once a month or so often when my daughter has fallen asleep in the car, and I'll drive off to a nice little layby on my way home and devour my Bic Mac meal whilst idly watching the sheep or cows in the adjacent field.

Clearly though, I'm not the only person who makes this same pilgrimage, judging by the amount of waste that ends up in the hedgerow the other side. Who's coming along to police that? The frequency of it is clearly not a one-time event nor is there any possibility for it to be an "accidental discharge" from a passing refuse lorry or similar. it's been thrown out, but who is going around picking it up and then going to trace everyone down?

(You can stop on the way out of the drive through bit if you wish, and there are great big covered bins there with a target painted on the back of them for you to throw your litter at from the driver's side window. People still miss and won't clear it up, though McD's do at least have a person on litter duty most of the time)

Just take your litter home, problem solved.

Well if it's like the lay-by near my house, then the same local walkers/residents who have to pick up all the crap blowing around currently.
The only difference would be that number plates could be reported to the council/Police (not sure who is responsible for littering prosecutions) and hopefully a nice little fine or two will 'remind' McD's patrons to take their litter home

I wasn't concerned about being wrongfully accused, I was suggesting that those whom this idea is aimed at could use it as an excuse.

Ironic farmers complaining about litter. Round our way, which is very rural, pretty much for the whole of autumn and winter, everyday they cover the roads with huge amounts of shyte and mud from their fields, diesel from their leaky unregistered and untaxed tractors, not attempts to clean it up, no signage to warn motorists (particularly bikers). They don't give a hairy st about spreading their crap around for miles on end, so whilst I think McDs littering is the work of utter scum, maybe Farmer Parmer should think about their impact on the environment we need to share with them before they go moaning about the odd bargain bucket lobbed in the hedgerow by some chavver in a Corsa.

And before any farmers come on bleating about "what can we do", how about wheel washes, suction brushes etc to clean it up, signage to warn road users or even, heaven forbid, doing something else if it is stting it down with rain and come back to it when the field isn't a fking swamp! ?

I go to Maccy D's drive-thru and order two Big Mac meals with drinks. Who at the restaurant is going to be responsible for sticking 7 labels on to the various containers I've just been handed?

Maybe you should go and live in a nice clean town, where it sounds like you belong.

The "your litter" was intended for the general public, not you specifically.

They manage to put the Monopoly stickers on ok.
The problem is as someone else mentioned, the crows. Seen them pull stuff out of bins a couple of times.

I expect the miscreats will just rip the printed bit off and dump the rest.

I once reunited a nice young lady with her discarded sandwich in a long queue to the traffic lights. Before I could fart a squeeky, three of them were out of their car and the sandwich ended up on my windscreen, together with a huge gob from the fat one.

That girl could have spat for England, she got me fairly and squarely from two car lengths away.

Good job I didn't mention they were black, the PH Inquisition would have been round for a re-run smile
