Morning all!

I currently run a 2008 Navara automatic, 85% of the time it’s towing, and I’m getting 15/17mpg out of it, which stings!

I’m looking at replacing it, Mainly cos it’s the best option financially for a few reasons. The truck that catches my eye the most is a 2013+ ford ranger, likely in limited or wildtrak trim, although my budget does creep into the facelift model, but would only be a lower spec model with slightly higher miles. The new shape navara np300 also just about falls into my budget, I like the way they look but don’t know much more about them.

What are people’s experiences of these vehicles, and spending the majority of the time towing, and what sort of average MPG are you getting, is there a big difference between the manual and autos?

I toyed with the idea of a disco 4, which I’d love, and they are superb tow trucks, but budget would only really get me a 2010/12 with 100/120k on it. Another option is getting a normal dropside truck, I.e. a cabstar, transit, crafter. And keeping my existing navara, (which has its positives); but I’m not massively keen on running two vehicles if I don’t really need to.

Thanks in advance gentleladies and gentlemen.

MY father-in-law has had 2 rangers to tow his caravan, he has a 2.2 auto then the 3.2 manual. He liked them both but access and size was the reason he got rid of them.
He said the 3.2 was a far better tow vehicle and there was not a massive change in the economy.

I have a 2012 hilux 3 ltr bought new, used to tow a twin axil trailer with a sylva on it, get 25mpg no effort mostly motor way towing, back and for the curcuit, only done 11,000 miles as that is a only function, I have a 2018 ranger as a company vehicle its no where near as good as the hilux, there is no benifit in kind tax, where I live to I can use the ranger to commute totally free because I wouldn't put any of my money into it, I just don't like the gear box and power delivery.

I tow all day everyday, I’ve had L200’s, Navara, ranger and the cheapest to run / tax and insure

5.4V8 F150 on LPG, I’m getting the equivalent of 24mpg with over 350bhp and tow rating of 5600kg (in the states), but even with 3500kg in tow over here it’s not breaking a sweat.

I ran a 2013 hilux, 3.0 auto, use to average 28mpg, that was school run type use.

I’d love a big yank tank, but they’re just too big to be practical here!

What are people’s experiences of disco 4’s, likely 2010/12 vintage

Have a read of this recent thread -

With any LR product it seems very much luck of the drawer, some have no issues others have loads. Look out for one with detailed history with evidence of enthusiast care and annual servicing.

A guy in my work had a new Navara and the MPG was 8 worse without the toolbox which is worth noting.
