"So"

Just wondering if any of you guys out there find it strange as i do why it seems a lot of folk are using the word "So" when they open a conversation ? is it me, or is it a new thing ??? i dont ever remember as a kid and growing up this being the way to start a conversation, maybe its just me ??
For example they say..."So....i went to the shops today to do some shopping" or "So....i picked the kids up from school today" or "So...this is my new dog Rambo" :-) just a funny ol question for a Tuesday morning guys, or is it just me that wonders this ??

Anyway it's, like, you know, a kinda fashionable idiom.

Just like those other ones it will come and go. I reckon it comes from watching to many vlogs, you tubes etc where that becomes a standard intro.

Using it as a standard opening to every sentence is bad enough, but what's much worse it using it in response to any question:

"What are you studying at University?" "So, I'm studying . . . . "

Yep. Same with people, usually politicians who start a sentence with 'look...' in a sort of passive aggressive authoritarian way.

It just seems rude, as if a demand is being placed.
