Ladies and Gents,

I am appealing to you the community as my knowledge on the subject matter is sadly lacking. I have an E91, manual, 2006 plate which I has been, and still is, a great car for my needs.

In the last week it has started not to pull as smoothly when you press the accelerator if the revs are at 1600-1900. Before it was no problem and it simply gathered itself and smoothly delivered the goods. Now, particularly in 5th or 6th, whilst I know pick up won't be immediate and thrust you back in your seat, it has lurched a couple of times and then accelerated.

My apologies, possibly not the best description but if anyone has an insight/ experience or wants further info to be able to shed some light on proceedings I would be only too happy to hear.

With many, many thanks in advance

Probably VANOS Solenoids.

You can try cleaning them (and the check valves in the oil supply gallery), but this IME only give temporary respite.

Replace with new BMW dealer parts £85each approx.

Petrol or Diesel? I had a similar issue with my 2006 330D E91, all of sudden it lost it's low down grunt or seemed to take an age for it arrive which was quite apparent on country roads, the very next day had an engine light come on and followed by a message about the EGR valve, ended up getting it replaced.

One question, if you have a diesel can you hear what is likened to a quacking noise coming from the engine bay? Pretty audible from outside the car and you can sometimes hear it inside too.

Thanks Martyn, sorry should have said originally - its a 330i so no discernible noises as you suggest for the diesel. Is the EGR valve common to both engines of both fuel types? Was it £££?
