Sad day all round, Gary Rhodes and now someone else from my younger years.

His autobiographies are works of genius. I had tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks on multiple occasions. A truly gifted and very funny man.

RIP Clive.

Yes, sad. A very funny man.

To be honest though I thought he'd died a few years ago.

Funny and insightful. He will be missed.

CJ on the time unit the"Hermie" - that period between today and the next predicted end-of-humanity

With particular reference to anthropogenic climate-related Armageddons.
From 10 years ago and still as relevant today

So true. And the best TV critic ever. Once described Barbara Cartland's face as looking like 2 crows having crashed into the white cliffs of Dover. rofl

And Jonathan Miller too (even if he was rather pompous)

He’s been updating all his personal details online over the last few years to make sure his death and life are accurately reported when, as he put it himself, he’s on the slab!

Fantastic witty man who brightened up my life on many occasions.

Clive, you will be sorely missed!

Even though he became most famous because of his TV shows, James was much, much more sophisticated than how he appeared on TV. His writing was sublime and his thoughts so perceptive.

I came to learn of him when he was the regular TV critic for The Observer. It wasn't his views of the TV shows that caught my eye but his use of English and his interpretations of the Human Condition. Unlike most TV critics of that era, who tended to only review dramas or art type programming, everything was fair game for James - notably sports broadcasting, mainstream TV shows and current affairs.

One of my favourite James quotes is "If I find myself agreeing with Germaine Greer, I feel like I should re-examine my view point" (or words to that effect).

Back in the 80s. I bought his TV review compilations (Visions Before Midnight - The Crystal Bucket - Glued to the Box) and his autobiographies.

A wonderful observer of the everyday with a talent to make anything read as exceptional. His writing was funny, sad and always impeccably crafted. Sad loss
