Cheapish family friendly 4x4 capable of snow / green laning

I’ve been running a 99 2.8 Z3 for the last couple of years with a 1.2 DSG front wheel drive Yeti as the family wagon daily driver for the wife.
My Z3 barely gets used anymore with the little one (17 months) due to car seats etc and I find myself in the scenario now where I need to get something more capable of doing a run to nursery to collect my daughter when the wife has the Yeti for work.
Plan for the replacement is hopefully to find something that will happily handle the rare time once a year we get snow with no issues and have the capability to go green laning as I feel if I’m moving away from having a spawty car I should go bathing in mud perhaps instead. Ideally isofix compatible also.
Wanting to spend less than 7k including p/x of Z3.
Initial thought was a 2004 Discovery 2 TD5 however I am slightly fearful of the reputation they seem to gain online for reliability and bills.
Another was a Jimny however I don’t think that has enough safety stuff / crash test outcomes of a good nature to be a child chariot also.
Other than that I’m a bit lost in terms of what to look at to meet those requirements.
An R32 golf is the other option having 4wd and a bit of performance to not need green laning capability. But mainly the exhaust note.

I'd agree with this suggestion. Plenty of poke from the 3.0 diesel, great off road capability. Loads of room for the family with an interior, which whilst dated, is easy to keep clean and maintain. Pre March 06 will be cheaper to tax. I ran one for a couple of years and loved it.
