I have a Media Server, I want to be able to keep a portable hard drive full of media for when I travel and I want to be able to get music on my phone etc.

I know I can just Copy-Paste, but I'd like to be able to flag artists or tv shows and have it sync new stuff automatically and ideally it would be a bit more sophisticated in terms of clearing space on the drive, eg if I put a film on and watch it, have it removed next time the space is needed. I'd like it to hold the last x downloaded films too.

I'd like to be able to flag the artists for my phone and have it manage what's copied to my phone, but also be able to change phones or use other devices and have it copy the same music to that too.

I'm running UnRaid if there's options that would sit on the server, but I'm equally happy to plug into my W10 PC and have that pull from the server as the server is tucked way, so it's easier and it won't be a problem moving the media over the network as it's all gigabit. Priority is features rather than running on the server is what I mean.

Not sure if this is possible at all, just wondering if anyone knows anything decent that would do this for me?

Why not just use Plex Premium and enable remote access?

I'd second Plex. Add a premium pass and you can sync from your media server anything you like to any device with a Plex client. There are some great Docker templates for Plex in the Unraid community applications store. Plex will let you search and filter by artist/genre/director/actor - anything you like really.

I did wonder about using Plex, I already have it setup on the server, it's just expensive as that's the only feature I'm interested in and it won't get more than occasional use. Don't mind paying for something, but not £95 for not much more than a file mover.

Wait for the next offer to come around which is every 2-3 months - should get a 1/3 off. I'll be paying for it when it next comes around as I'd like remote access and all the other features it comes with.

Remote access works for Plex anyway doesn't it? Maybe that's changed since I last needed it, but I've remoted in plenty of times, my Parents TV is logged in for example.

Remote access comes with Plex for free but not offline sync.

I haven’t used it, but it may be worth looking at Emby as an alternative. I don’t know if offline sync comes with it for free but I do know there’s some good docker images available in Unraid for it.

I looked at Emby as well, it's the same pricing model, just a little more expensive, so not sure it's gets me any closer unfortunately.

I think I can sort Music with Google Play Music as it looks like it'll automatically fill a set amount of storage space, but needs a bit more investigation.....

I use Google Play Music for my home music collection, it's free to store 50,000 tracks which lets me have access to all my stuff when I'm out and about. Apple Music for everything else....
