The alternator has just packed up on my 95/N griff 500 (serpentine engine with pas) - the bearings have gone.

It is made by Magneti Marelli but unfortunately doesn't seem to have any model numbers on it. The connections on the back are (roughly) in line and are marked B+ (13mm nut), D+ (8mm nut) and W (spade connector).

I have been told that it is a Range Rover part and have tracked down a company that can supply me a reconditioned exchange unit. They are offering 100amp and 120amp ratings. Trouble is I can't find any referance to the correct power rating in the bible or anywhere else (could always be I'm not looking in the right places).

The 100amp sounds more than enough to me but does anybody know? More importantly, would 100 amps be too much and fry my wiring?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Howard

The alternator is a standard Land Rover 100 Amp jobby, part number AMR4247. You can get a brand new outright one for about £150+VAT if you know where to look!

Howard, I too have a Magnetti Marelli on my 94 Griff 500. Are you sure the bearings are shot or have they just come adrift.

The ball bearing at the front (PULLEY END) of mine came adrift - it's just glued in with Loctite and this caused the whole shaft/armature to have end float (axial movement). The rear of the shaft is supported by a roller bearing which does not contribute anything to restraining end float. The shaft moved backwards a few mm and made a horrible graunching sound. I dis-assembled it, cleaned and bonded the bearing in with high temperature high strength bearing fit adhesive and it works fine.

Thanks guys.

Steve - no end float, so unfortunately not the bearing coming unseated.

Mark - the place I found want £120 plus VAT for an exchange reconditioned alternator! Where should I go looking for a new one?

Don't know if it makes any difference but I double checked the size of the contacts on the back this morning - 13mm nut, 10mm nut (not 8mm as I said before) and spade terminal.

Hi Howard

I have to admit to being guilty of having these, but I've found a better deal for you.

If you look at John Craddock's Land Rover Spares Direct site on the following link, type in the part number I gave you, you'll find they have them at £135+VAT+Carriage New!!!!

Alternators aren't really the core of my business, and I wouldn't want to be seen to be fishing on PH threads

BTW - smart tip Red Griff!
