I used the three pin plug in charger on my old i8 but it's possible to gain charge while driving.

If you want the full 18ish miles of electric charge for a commute for example you will need to plug the car in but if you are not bothered and just want the extra performance that comes from the battery then driving with the gearbox in sport will charge the battery.

Isn’t the I8 petrol tank only 24 litres? That would make it a right pain if driven in petrol only mode!

EDIT: 42 litres

Could Lexus lc500h be an option? It doesn't need charging.

Most Googles show 42 ltr which would give a range well in excess of 300 miles which seems to tally with user experience especially in Eco

As noted above 3 pin charging is fine but takes about 6 hours - much more advice in EV section here

Or use supermarket free charging - subscribing for paid electricity does not seem cost-effective compared with a couple of litres of petrol

Lots of people run these without ever charging them at home. Get on a couple of the FB groups, lots of info on there. I only charge the wife's up once every 2 or 3 weeks. She never charges it. She doesn't drive it a lot but it's nice, on the odd occasion I use it, to have the full beans available. I don't think many people buy a £100k+ hybrid and worry about the fuel economy. BMW knew this, the tech just showed the design/performance capability early on in the HEV market - not range. Only one mode though, sports mode smile Just park up at your local dealer every now and then and get a good full charge out of them. Say you're looking at getting a MVision when it arrives and they'll put you up for a few hours

I haven't charged mine very much at all - there's only 14-16 miles and even less when the aircon is on, or it's cold.

There's no congestion charge, aside from the £10 a year registration fee.
