I guess there are very few persons on here who have had experience with Universal Credit as its filled with Stair Dominating Powerfully Built Directors ,however even Powerfully built directors can fall by the way side through no fault of their own .
If any of you had the misfortune to have to genuinely claim Jobseeker's Allowance a few years ago you will know that after having a job how demeaning and demoralising this used to be . The way the staff in the job centres spoke to you ,the way G4S Security stood by overhearing the conversations and moved closer if they thought something was about to kick off . Every two weeks it was dreadful especially if the job centre was in the middle of a very affluent area it made the humiliation even worse . It seemed the people who had been on the system for year after year claiming everything under the sun were left alone and the poor souls who found themselves suddenly out of work and didn't understand the system had the pressure from the staff to do anything work wise . You could have lost a £85k a year job and have loads of professional qualifications they still treated you like a numpty suggesting you go to interviews for non skilled work paying minimum wage . That was then . The people abusing the system ruined it for the genuine souls who wanted to work but found themselves redundant or to sick to work ,so
Universal Credit was introduced . (They expect you to travel up to 1.5hrs each way to work and to work for the minimum wage just to get off the system) Not much has changed in the job centres ,it's like trying to speak to a robot ,set answers no emotion ) I witnessed a lady with no hair from cancer treatment being told she had to go to a particular interview that she disagreed with , she just got up in tears and walked out of the UC Job Centre . It can be very sad for some and abused by others .
Finding myself out of work yet again. I have had a life threatening illness and been plagued by health problems and really bad luck in life in general over the past 6 years. Jobs that haven't worked out ,self employed which took a nose dive once Brexit took a hold. The money had run out however the last resort was to ever sign on again . I do not Smoke, gamble or even drink very much and have no children or partner and have not been able to go on holiday for about 8 years . So after selling every piece of jewellery, musical instruments , memrobilia, number plate, paintings, family silver virtually anything that wasn't nailed down I sold to try and make ends meet instead of signing on whilst I looked for work .( 200 applications later and I eventually got a job about £9.00 p/HR.)
Even My phone is about 5 years old ,gone are the days when I had to have the latest of everything .I even sold my home and bought another for less money to try and free up some cash . That money is now gone just by existing and I have had a not very well paid job reciently that just didn't work out minimum wage long journey just a hellish existence . So I now have no alternative than to sign on for universal credit ,there's nothing left ,no savings,no pension NOTHING .They pay a single person about £370 PER MONTH ! That is after an assessment period of about 5 weeks . So nothing for 5 weeks normally . I then find out because the firm I worked for paid me the months wages I was owed for the previous months work and then some holiday pay about two weeks later this money was considered earnings and because it was paid during the assessment period even though it was for work done a month ago they would not pay me until 5th December! . I signed on the moment I stopped work at the end of Sepetember . I now find out that because the firm also paid a small amount of Holliday money that will reduce the UC amount in December to just £220 FOR THE WHOLE MONTH OF DECEMBER. A small tax rebate has just come through which will now cancel out money paid by UC until February . And because of this the council will not reduce the council tax payments so I'm paying full whack . I was told by UC if I had not have signed on so soon after losing the job and waited till I got paid THEN signed on this wouldn't have happened . Allthough the holiday pay and rebate would still have to be declared and would cancel out the money they pay . On top of all this I had to drive 30 miles to endure the humiliation of a health assement test for the DWP . Two hours of questioning ,and tasks like bending down , putting your hands to your chest lifting your leg . I'm not even applying for health benefits .All this and since before the end of September still not a penny from UC .First money is 5 th Dec £220 Two hundred and Twenty pounds for the whole month . You can only communicate with UC and the job centre by going on line they text you to tell you there's a message on your journal and you have to log on and see what the message is . (How do the homeless manage?)
How is anyone expected to pay for Internet connection ,the cost of a mobile phone ,travel to and from job centres which are miles from where I live ,full council tax , gas ,elect , water rates , buildings insurance, there's also maintenance costs where I live . Car ,petrol, insurance ,road tax let alone food on £220 for the whole of December . Theres no savings ,nothing left . I'm not looking for sympathy I just want to highlight how terrible the system is for genuine people who have tried everything under the sun to live ,work and exist before signing on and when you do this is how you get treated .It may help some of you in the future. So all the willy wavers and Powerfully built directors (I used to be one) believe me it can happen to anyone , life's fortunes can turn very quickly . I was reading another thread on here that was complaining about people spending their benefits money on Fags booze and Gambling. All I can say is that those people doing that must have other income or people around them that support them because the tiny amount paid by UC will not even cover my food bill and basic essentials for the month let alone booze fags and gambling . These people are not starving are they ,they are obviously more savvy than me . I will have to check out my local food bank as a last last resort now .Happy Xmas everyone .

Ps will I be voting Tory ? Not a chance .

Sorry to hear your misfortunes. the problem is because of all the waste on the benefit system the government can only afford you £220 if like other thread there was a crackdown on benefit fraud (for example the ones gambling it away) you perhaps would get a lot more. It does sound that you are the ones that really need it. You voting, I assume, Labour are just going to shoot your self in the foot. As Labour is planning to continue and grow their voting base (a lot/majority of benefit fraudsters will vote Labour because promise of more money and freebies is what they want.

Anyhow really sorry to hear your story, hope things move for the best for you.

Can I ask how UC compares to the old jobseekers allowance? Is the rate lower? Would you have received jobseekers allowance even if your employer was paying you the tailend of your salary and holiday allowance?

The principle of universal credit is perfectly fine - it simply needs more funding.

OP sorry to hear your situation - can you ask family or friends for some short term support to get you over.
I know it’s hard to ask but no friend or family would let another struggle.

Yes, things can turn round very quickly indeed, your business could hit hard times, you could be made redundant, you could be struck down with illness, sorry to hear of your plight, hang on in there and good luck.

ive been on jobseekers many times in the past and also on UC.

its exactly the same, amount the same. the only difference is job seekers was paid every 2 weeks, UC is paid every month. if anything the UC system is much quicker..whilst you might wait 1 month for payment you can apply for/request an emergency/advance payment of up to half of your monlthy allowance. this comes out of your monthly payments and you can choose how much and over what length of time you want it to be taken out (i.e 1 month, 3 months, 6 months). You can get this payment on the day/day after you sign your UC agreement.

Interesting, thank you. UC's four week payment schedule does reek of design by committee rather than consultation with the end user.

Thats the problem. Much like speeding the easily targets are the ones the staff go after, the polite and compliant people. The ones that are too much work or trouble are left alone and those people have no qualms playing that card either intentionally or more likely just the way they are.

If you have health issues you need to apply for PIP .
I had to stop work as a truck driver due to heart disease and I also have osteoarthritis in my knees, back , hip and kneck . I delayed applying for PIP even though everyone at UC urged me to .
I was awarded the basic element plus the lower rate mobility allowance .
It basically doubled my income . The UC payment is the absolute minimum needed to live on . It doesn’t cover , internet , running a car or stuff like sky TV or netflix forget new phone contracts .
As mentioned all your dealings with UC is done online except for your meetings with your work coach . The extra difficulties of not being able to walk more than 50m at time meant that visits to things like the GP who is not on a bus route meant £12 per visit in taxi fares or hospital visits become a marathon of public transport runs . An outpatient appointment that would be a hour or so if you had a car turns into 3/4 of the day trek on public transport.
The UC system is supposed to bundle all the benefits into one system ,sadly it hasn't and never will . They should be steering you through the system and and placing everything in front of you , sadly this does not happen and it is charities that are picking up the job and getting people the help that they need
.
The authorities were told at the trial stages of UC that it wasn't working, every investigation into it has said that it wasn't working.
At the same time benefits for those with long term illness or disability were reduced or removed .

My wife and I applied for UC as the Childrens Allowance which catered for funding for full-time Nursery placements (if both are in employment) got swallowed into the Universal Credit system with little or no fanfare in February. It was a long questionnaire, having to list everything from tax details, 6 months' of payslips, P60's P11d's, every form you could imagine, then the pair of us taking a day off to go to the Job Centre (there's an anticipation at 10 as you wait for the doors to open, like Boxing Day at Next on Oxford Street)...

After jumping through several hoops and having to submit PDFs of every form each month, it just was not worth it for just £50 shaved off the costs of £1400 Nursery care for 2 kids under 3. They had claimed it could be up to at least half of your current payments would have been taken care of by Universal Credit.

But UC is designed for the professional shirkers, and those in any form of work are treated with contempt. We gave up after 3 months of faffing around, sending desperate posts via the Universal Credit chat box (really) to a moderator who'd check each form to see if you were eligible for £50 off a £1400 bill. It's the financial equivalent of VAR in football, only there to annoy and delay things.

We stood out being smartly dressed, perhaps we should have popped into Sports Direct next door and got a couple of Lonsdale tracksuits and Air Max trainers to fit in... rolleyes

A couple of years ago when i was between jobs i registered for UC. When i started work i sent them a letter giving them all the details: Employer/salary/start date etc and told them i was no longer entitled to any benefits as the wages were ample.

I then started work and thought no more of it. 12 months later i found myself out of work again (construction project finished) so i went and signed on again only to be told i had never signed off!

For a whole year they had heard nothing from me, I missed 12 months of signing on every two weeks, never once logged into 'the system' and they had continued to send out £300 every month. I hadn't even noticed as i was earning £150-200 a day and i am not one of those people who checks bank statements. If the balance looks about right / I am not overdrawn I don't sweat it.

It then took them nearly 2 yrs to sort out a repayment schedule to get the over payment back!

The health/work assessment is a complete st show. I've had patients with major health conditions and associated disability be deemed 'fit' for work. Genuinely beyond comprehension. I've written many letters of support when it came to taking their case to tribunal. IIRC, 70% of tribunal appeals were successful. The assessment is (imho) not fit for purpose.

If you are unexpectedly receiving £300 a month into your bank account every month, that would indicate a serious degree of disorganisation. Why would it take 2 years to sort out repayment?

i dont believe that at all to be honest.

the people who work there only care that you're meeting your agreement. it depends on the person. you go every 2 weeks or so to 'sign on'. every month or so you might see an 'advisor' to discuss how your job hunting is going and if you need any further help. if the person you see has a brain they'll see that most good people are actually job hunting. if you have a niche job sector they'll leave you to it. if you're looking for general jobs/retail, they might show you some on the system. for many people they'll 'take it easy' for 6 months. after that they might suggest to you maybe start looking for other work, extend your commuting time frrom 1hour to 1.5 hours etc.. and they'll update your 'agreement' accordingly, because they're just told to do that.

for many people who are stilll job hunting after 1year, or more they'll put them on work programme (they wont forget them). meaning they'll attend various employability workshops, basic courses, time with a careers advisor (not someone frrom the jobcentre) who will look over your CV, give you aciton plans etc. give you more focused guidance.

Yes, I am not very well organised, I hate dealing with 'stuff'. I had years worth of unopened bank statements until i ticked a box somewhere and they stopped sending them out.

Why did it take them two yrs? I have no idea!
