It randomly broke despite having a Spigen case which has been in use for a long time and offers great protection.

Will Apple replace it under consumer law or as a goodwill gesture?

If not, does anyone know how much it would cost at the Apple Store?

No they won't do it FOC or as a GOGW.

It's classed as an "other repair"

It's £346.44

£350 for a new back? Jesus.

You can buy iphone 8's for way less than that.

When the glass back on my X went it was £546.44 so effectively the phone became uneconomical for repair (it was 4mths after release)

It sold on eBay in damaged condition for about £470.

If it's your own phone, does your house insurance not cover it?

Did you pay that amount for a replacement phone and keep the broken one to sell as you did?

Loads of companies on eBay will do it: you mail the phone to them and they will repair it and post it back. Costs about £40.

And many complexly screw it up or when pushed ok of they actually do it - don't. There are a lot of components glued to that rear shell (they need to use a very precise enclave to separate the parts effectively - not just a heat gun - and removal is massively delicate and often bends the frame - hence the high replacement cost from Apple as they appreciate the complexity and challenge in this.

I’ve used such services several times with no issues, I guess it depends on who performs the repair but I’d have no hesitation in doing it again.
