UK - why no vignettes?

As it says on the title TBH. Quite a few European countries charge for a vignette upon entering their country and you will get fined for not having one if caught. Seems to me that it'd be a quick, pain-free way to raise revenue

Why don't we?

One possibility is that it would cost more to administer than would be collected. Another way to look at that is Capita wouldn't be interested.

HGVs already do.

For cars then the cost to implement versus revenue gained probably isn't worth it for a non transit country like the UK.

We don't have tourist taxes either (although Edinburgh are bringing one in). I know it's only ~€2 a night in most places but when you know you'll be boosting their tax coffers and local economy by spending hundreds of euros on dining, drinking, sight seeing and shopping it's a bit perplexing.

I reckon UK plates should make us exempt to road tolls and vignettes, just as non-uk cars are exempt of ved in the UK
